...SUMMER 2010 WAS ONE OF THE HOTTEST AND DRIEST SUMMERS ON
RECORD ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA...

THE CLIMATOLOGICAL SUMMER SEASON (JUNE-AUGUST) OVER EAST CENTRAL
FLORIDA WAS DOMINATED BY THE SURFACE ATLANTIC RIDGE AND HIGH
PRESSURE RIDGE ALOFT. THE PLACEMENT AND STRENGTH OF THESE FEATURES
HELPED CONTRIBUTE TO WELL ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND BELOW NORMAL
RAINFALL ACROSS THE AREA.

.TEMPERATURES...

DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURES FOR MUCH OF THE SUMMER REMAINED NEAR TO
SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL. ONLY A FEW BELOW NORMAL VALUES OCCURRED...
MAINLY FROM INCREASED CLOUD COVER BROUGHT ABOUT BY WEAK FRONTAL
BOUNDARIES INTRUDING INTO THE AREA. MUCH OF THE ABOVE AVERAGE HEAT
EXPERIENCED THIS SUMMER WAS DUE TO THE UNSEASONABLY WARM OVERNIGHT
LOWS THAT WERE OBSERVED OVER MUCH OF THE REGION. NUMEROUS WARMEST
LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE TIED OR BROKEN THROUGH THE SEASON. IN
THE END...ALL FOUR MAJOR CLIMATE SITES IN EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA HAD
ONE OF THE WARMEST SUMMER AVERAGE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE VALUES ON
RECORD. MELBOURNE HAD THE WARMEST OF THESE WITH AN AVERAGE SEASONAL
LOW TEMPERATURE VALUE OF 76.1 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT WHICH BROKE THE
PREVIOUS RECORD OF 75.0 DEGREES SET IN 2005. DAYTONA BEACH...
ORLANDO...AND VERO BEACH ALL HAD AVERAGE SUMMER MINIMUM TEMPERATURE
VALUES THAT RANKED AS SECOND WARMEST ON RECORD (75.0...74.8...AND
74.8 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT RESPECTIVELY).

OVERALL THE AVERAGE SEASONAL TEMPERATURE DEPARTURES WERE AROUND 2
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS THE REGION. DAYTONA BEACH WAS 2.0
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 83.0 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT. ORLANDO WAS 1.8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL WITH AN AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 83.8 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. MELBOURNE WAS 2.7 DEGREES
ABOVE NORMAL WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 83.5. VERO BEACH HAD ITS
HOTTEST SUMMER ON RECORD WITH AN AVAERAGE OF 83.1 DEGREES WHICH WAS
1.9 ABOVE NORMAL...PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 82.7 IN 1998. THE VALUES FOR
DAYTONA BEACH...ORLANDO...AND MELBOURNE MADE 2010 AS THEIR SECOND
HOTTEST SUMMERS ON RECORD.

A FEW STATIONS IN THE NWS COOPERATIVE NETWORK INCURRED THERE HOTTEST
SUMMER ALSO IN 2010. TITUSVILLE HAD AN AVERAGE SUMMER TEMPERATURE OF
84.9 DEGREES...SURPASSING THE OLD RECORD OF 84.5 IN 1945. THE FORT
PIERCE WATER PLANT CAME IN AT 83.1 AND JUST TOPPED THE PREVIOUS
RECORD OF 83.0 DEGREES IN 1924. THE STUART AVERAGED 84.3 DEGREES TO
ALSO REACH NUMBER 1 ON THE HOT SUMMER LIST...84.1 IN 1942 WAS THE
PREVIOUS HOTTEST. RECORDS FOR TITUSVILLE AND FORT PIERCE GO BACK TO
1901 AND STUART TO 1936.

THERE WERE A COUPLE MAIN CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THESE ABOVE NORMAL
TEMPERATURES EXPERIENCED THIS SUMMER. ONE WAS A DOMINATE HIGH
PRESSURE RIDGE ALOFT OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES WHICH
HELPED SUPPRESS AFTERNOON SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. THIS
ALLOWED FOR MORE SUNSHINE AND DAYTIME HEATING ACROSS THE AREA.
ANOTHER WAS A FAVORABLE POSITION OF THE SURFACE ATLANTIC HIGH
PRESSURE RIDGE FOR EASTERLY FLOW ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA FOR
MUCH OF THE SEASON. THIS HELPED CONTRIBUTE TO WARMER OVERNIGHT LOWS
ACROSS THE AREA.

AN INTERESTING SIDE NOTE TO THESE WELL ABOVE NORMAL SUMMER
TEMPERATURES IS THE FACT THAT THE YEAR STARTED WITH ONE OF THE
COLDEST WINTERS ON RECORD. THIS HAS LED TO ONE OF THE LARGER SWINGS
IN AVERAGE TEMPERATURES FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR
SINCE RECORDS ACROSS THE REGION BEGAN.

.RAINFALL...

THE AVERAGE POSITION OF THE SURFACE ATLANTIC HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE
FROM JUNE TO JULY WAS FAVORABLE FOR WELL INLAND MOVEMENT OF THE EAST
COAST SEA BREEZE. THIS CONCENTRATED MORE SCATTERED AFTERNOON
CONVECTION TOWARD THE INTERIOR AND WESTERN PORTIONS OF CENTRAL
FLORIDA. THIS COMBINED WITH THE INTRUSION OF SEVERAL DRY AIRMASSES
AND INCREASED SUBSIDENCE FROM A DOMINATE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE ALOFT
WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO ONE OF MORE DRIER STARTS TO SUMMER ON RECORD...
ESPECIALLY ALONG THE EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA COASTLINE. BY AUGUST THE
SURFACE RIDGE SHIFTED SOUTHWARD AND WITH THE HELP OF A COUPLE OF
WEAK FRONTAL BOUNDARIES ALLOWED FOR MORE NORMAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS AS
PRECIPITATION BECAME MORE WIDESPREAD. HOWEVER THIS WAS NOT ENOUGH TO
MAKE UP FOR THE RAINFALL DEFICITS FROM EARLIER IN THE SEASON AND
THEREFORE THE END OF SUMMER PRECIPITATION TOTALS WERE BELOW NORMAL.

ORLANDO RECEIVED 13.11 INCHES OF RAINFALL THROUGH THE SEASON WHICH
RANKED IT AS ITS DRIEST SUMMER ON RECORD...BREAKING THE PREVIOUS
RECORD OF 13.26 INCHES SET IN 1952. TITUSVILLE ALSO HAD ITS DRIEST
SUMMER ON RECORD WITH A MEAGER 9.39 INCHES OF OBSERVED RAINFALL
WHICH WAS 11 INCHES BELOW NORMAL (PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 10.08 INCHES
IN 1950). MELBOURNE RANKED AS 6TH DRIEST WITH 9.72 INCHES OF
RAINFALL AND VERO BEACH HAD ITS 3RD DRIEST SUMMER WITH 9.67 INCHES.
THE DRIEST SUMMERS ON RECORD FOR THESE SITES WERE 8.28 INCHES IN
1993 FOR MELBOURNE AND 8.24 INCHES IN 1950 FOR VERO BEACH.
