...2011-2012 SPRING SEASON WAS MUCH WARMER THAN NORMAL...

STRONG COLD FRONTS WERE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN ACROSS EAST CENTRAL
FLORIDA FROM MARCH TO MAY. WHILE A FEW BRIEF COOL DOWNS OCCURRED
OVER THE AREA...THIS SPRING WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR ITS ABOVE NORMAL
TEMPERATURES. PRECIPITATION WAS LACKING IN MARCH AND APRIL...BUT
FINALLY PICKED UP ACROSS CENTRAL FLORIDA IN MAY. DESPITE THIS
INCREASE IN RAINFALL LATER IN THE SPRING... OVERALL DRIER THAN
NORMAL CONDITIONS OCCURRED ACROSS THE REGION.

.TEMPERATURES...

SPRING STARTED WITH RECORD WARMTH IN THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF MARCH
WHICH ENDED AS A STRONGER COLD FRONT MOVED THROUGH THE AREA. WARMER
TEMPERATURES SOON RETURNED THOUGH AND PERSISTED THROUGH MUCH OF THE
MONTH. THESE ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES RANKED THIS MARCH IN THE TOP
TEN WARMEST ON RECORD AT DAYTONA BEACH...ORLANDO...MELBOURNE AND
VERO BEACH. APRIL GENERALLY CONTINUED A WARMER THAN NORMAL PATTERN
ACROSS THE REGION. HOWEVER A COUPLE STRONGER COOL DOWNS DID OCCUR...
ESPECIALLY WITH A COLD FRONT THAT MOVED THROUGH THE AREA LATER IN
THE MONTH. THE COLDER AIRMASS THAT MOVED INTO THE AREA BEHIND THIS
FRONT GENERATED RECORD LOWS WITH VALUES 10 TO 15 DEGREES BELOW
NORMAL DURING THE 24TH AND 25TH OF APRIL. TEMPERATURES QUICKLY
REBOUNDED AFTERWARD AND GENERALLY STAYED NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL INTO
MAY AS STRONGER COLD FRONTS CEASED TO MOVE THROUGH CENTRAL FLORIDA.

AVERAGE SEASONAL TEMPERATURES ENDED UP WELL ABOVE NORMAL WITH ALL
MAIN CLIMATE SITES IN THE AREA RANKING IN THEIR TOP TEN RESPECTIVE
WARMEST SPRINGS ON RECORD.

.RAINFALL...

DRIER THAN NORMAL CONDITIONS OCCURRED IN MARCH AS PRECIPITATION
WAS LIMITED DUE TO WEAK FRONTAL PASSAGES AND ISOLATED SHOWER AND
STORM COVERAGE ALONG SEA BREEZE BOUNDARIES. RAINFALL AMOUNTS IN
MARCH GENERALLY RANGED FROM 30 TO 50 PERCENT OF NORMAL. RAIN EVENTS
INCREASED IN APRIL BUT WERE NOT WIDESPREAD. LOCALLY HEAVIER
RAINFALL OCCURRED ACROSS PORTIONS OF BREVARD COUNTY AND THE TREASURE
COAST...HOWEVER OVERALL ACROSS THE REGION BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION
CONTINUED. DRY CONDITIONS WERE PREVALENT IN THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY
AND THEN INCREASING MOISTURE AHEAD OF A FRONTAL BOUNDARY ON THE 7TH
KICKED OFF SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE AREA.
MOISTURE THEN LINGERED OVER THE REGION WITH SEA BREEZE INITIATED
SHOWERS AND STORMS OCCURRING ON ALMOST A DAILY BASIS. THIS ACTIVITY
COMBINED WITH RAINS FROM TROPICAL STORM BERYL IN LATE MAY PROVIDED
NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS ACROSS THE REGION.

DESPITE THIS LATE SEASON PRECIPITATION...MUCH OF EAST CENTRAL
FLORIDA HAD SEASONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS THAT WERE BELOW NORMAL.
