...MAY 2013 WAS COOLER THAN NORMAL WITH ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL...

AFTER A WARM APRIL...A COOL AND WET PATTERN SETTLED IN FOR MOST OF 
THE MONTH OF MAY. SEVERAL MULTI-DAY RAINFALL EVENTS IN ADDITION TO 
THE TRANSITION TO WET SEASON TYPE AFTERNOON SHOWERS AND 
THUNDERSTORMS BROUGHT ABUNDANT RAINFALL. THE ASSOCIATED CLOUD COVER 
ALSO HELPED KEEP TEMPERATURES BELOW NORMAL. 

.TEMPERATURES...
MAY STARTED OFF COOL AS A WEAK LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVED ACROSS THE 
STATE KEEPING ABUNDANT CLOUD COVER IN PLACE AND HOLDING TEMPERATURES 
BELOW NORMAL. A FRONTAL BOUNDARY MOVED ACROSS THE STATE ON THE 4TH 
AS THIS LOW MOVED EAST...BRINGING SEVERAL DAYS OF WELL BELOW NORMAL 
TEMPERATURES. OFFSHORE FLOW AHEAD OF FRONTS ON THE 11TH AND 23RD 
BRIEFLY BROUGHT TEMPERATURES ABOVE NORMAL BEFORE COOLER BELOW NORMAL 
TEMPERATURES RETURNED BEHIND THESE BOUNDARIES. STRONG ONSHORE FLOW 
THAT DEVELOPED ON THE 26TH AND LASTED THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH 
KEPT DAYTIME TEMPERATURES BELOW NORMAL AND OVERNIGHT LOWS WELL ABOVE 
NORMAL. 

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE DEPARTURES FOR MAY WERE BETWEEN 1 TO 2 DEGREES 
BELOW NORMAL.

-MAY 29TH: RECORD WARM MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 76 DEGREES. THE 
           PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 74 SET IN 2000.
-MAY 30TH: RECORD WARM MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 76 DEGREES.         
           THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 75 SET IN 1970.
-MAY 31ST: RECORD WARM MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 77 DEGREES.         
           THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 76 SET IN 1970.

MELBOURNE:
-MAY 31ST: TIED WARM MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 77 DEGREES. ALSO SET 
           IN 1989 AND 1980. 

VERO BEACH:
-MAY 2ND:  RECORD COOL MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 73 DEGREES. THE 
           PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 74 SET IN 1963.
-MAY 7TH:  RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE OF 52 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS 
           RECORD WAS 53 SET IN 1992.
-MAY 30TH: RECORD WARM MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 77 DEGREES. THE 
           PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 75 SET IN 2011...2010...1953.
-MAY 31ST: RECORD WARM MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 77 DEGREES. THE 
           PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 76 SET IN 1989...1988...1953.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE VALUES FOR MAY 2013 AT THE FOUR PRIMARY 
CLIMATE SITES ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKINGS 
PROVIDED IF IN THE TOP 10):

-DAYTONA BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 74.0 DEGREES 
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.0 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. 

-ORLANDO HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 75.6 DEGREES 
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.7 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. 

-MELBOURNE HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 75.3 DEGREES 
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.0 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. 

-VERO BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 75.0 DEGREES 
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS TIES 1969 FOR 
THE 9TH COLDEST MAY ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.   

.RAINFALL...   
A WEAK LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM THAT MOVED ACROSS THE STATE BETWEEN THE 
2ND AND 4TH BROUGHT HEAVY RAIN TO MOST OF THE AREA...ESPECIALLY WITH 
COASTAL CONVERGENCE ALONG THE VOLUSIA COAST. THE MONTH ALSO SAW A 
TRANSITION TO A MORE TYPICAL WET SEASON PATTERN WITH SHOWERS AND 
THUNDERSTORMS MOST AFTERNOONS THAT WERE ENHANCED BY LATE SEASON 
FRONTAL PASSAGES ON THE 13TH AND 25TH. DEEP AND MOIST EASTERLY FLOW 
ACROSS THE AREA FROM THE 26TH THROUGH THE 31ST BROUGHT PERSISTENT 
ONSHORE MOVING SHOWERS WITH THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL GENERALLY ALONG 
THE COAST SOUTH OF CAPE CANAVERAL. 

RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THE MONTH RANGED FROM 5 TO 9 INCHES FOR MANY 
AREA CLIMATE SITES OR ROUGHLY 2 TO 6 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL.

-MAY 3RD: RECORD RAINFALL OF 2.26 INCHES. PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 0.58 
INCHES SET IN 1937. 

ORLANDO:
-MAY 2ND: RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.70 INCHES. PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 1.43 
INCHES SET IN 1905. 

VERO BEACH:
-MAY 2ND: RECORD RAINFALL OF 2.43 INCHES. PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 1.04 
INCHES SET IN 1960. 
-MAY 20TH: RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.39 INCHES. PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 0.75 
INCHES SET IN 1969.

5.91 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 3RD WETTEST MAY ON 
RECORD FOR THIS SITE. 

-ORLANDO RECEIVED 5.05 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS 1.60 
INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. 

-MELBOURNE RECEIVED 6.39 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS 
3.10 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 10TH WETTEST MAY ON 
RECORD FOR THIS SITE. 

-VERO BEACH RECEIVED 8.19 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS 
4.83 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 5TH WETTEST MAY ON 
RECORD FOR THIS SITE.
