PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL
1031 PM EDT SAT JUL 2 2011

...ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES WERE OBSERVED OVER THE AREA DURING JUNE
2011...
...WET SEASON FINALLY ARRIVES DURING LATE JUNE BRINGING VARYING
RAINFALL AMOUNTS...

FRONTAL PASSAGES ENDED IN JUNE AS IS TYPICAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR
WITH A HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE GENERALLY PERSISTING OVER CENTRAL
FLORIDA. HOT AND RELATIVELY DRY CONDITIONS REMAINED OVER THE AREA
FOR MUCH OF THE MONTH. THEN TOWARDS THE END OF JUNE A MORE DISTURBED
WEATHER PATTERN TOOK FORM OVER FLORIDA ALLOWING FOR SEVERAL DAYS OF
ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL AS WELL AS CLOUDY AND SLIGHTLY COOLER
CONDITIONS.

.TEMPERATURES...
A MEAN HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE EXTENDING ACROSS THE ATLANTIC AND OVER
CENTRAL FLORIDA PREVENTED PASSAGE OF ANY FRONTAL BOUNDARIES INTO
JUNE. AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES REMAINED NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL WITH
LITTLE RELIEF DUE TO A GENERAL LACK OF CONVECTION MOST DAYS. THE
HOTTEST TEMPERATURES OCCURRED IN MID JUNE FROM THE 13TH-15TH WHEN
HIGHS REACHED INTO THE MID-UPPER 90S. MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE RECORDS
WERE TIED OR BROKEN AT MELBOURNE AND VERO BEACH ON THE 14TH AND AT
DAYTONA BEACH ON THE 15TH. AN INCREASE IN CONVECTION AND CLOUDS OVER
THE AREA HELPED GIVE SOME RELIEF TO THE ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES
LATE IN THE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE VALUES FOR JUNE AT THE FOUR MAIN CLIMATE
SITES ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKINGS PROVIDED
IF IN THE TOP 10):

-DAYTONA BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 80.4 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 0.7 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL.

-ORLANDO HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 82.7 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.5 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE
9TH WARMEST JUNE ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

-MELBOURNE HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 81.2 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS TIES JUNE OF
1981 AS THE 4TH WARMEST JUNE ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

-VERO BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 80.9 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 0.5 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE
10TH WARMEST JUNE ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

.RAINFALL...

A WEAK DISTURBANCE CROSSED THE AREA ON THE 1ST OF JUNE AND BROUGHT
WIDESPREAD...BUT LIGHT...RAINFALL AMOUNTS TO NORTHERN PORTIONS OF
EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA. HOWEVER...DRIER CONDITIONS THEN BEGAN TO
DOMINATE OVER THE REGION TOWARD THE MIDDLE OF JUNE...DELAYING THE
NORMAL START OF THE WET SEASON. INCREASING MOISTURE AHEAD OF A WEAK
TROUGH ON THE 14TH INITIATED MORE SCATTERED AFTERNOON SHOWER AND
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH. HOWEVER THIS
INCREASE IN AFTERNOON CONVECTION WAS SHORT LIVED AS DRIER AIR
RETURNED TO THE AREA ON THE 19TH. SOUTHERLY FLOW THEN BEGAN TO
PULL IN DEEPER MOISTURE FROM THE TROPICS OVER THE AREA BY THE 24TH.
THIS MOISTURE AND THE EXISTENCE OF A DISTURBED WEATHER PATTERN ALOFT
AIDED IN HIGHER COVERAGE OF RAINFALL THROUGH THE REST OF THE MONTH
AND ALLOWED THE WET SEASON OVER EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA TO FINALLY
BEGIN.

THE HEAVIER RAINS DURING THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS OF JUNE DID NOT
IMPACT ALL AREAS AND THEREFORE PRODUCED VARIABLE PRECIPITATION
TOTALS. JUNE RAINFALL DEPARTURES RANGED ANYWHERE FROM 2 TO 3 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL IN SOME AREAS UP TO 3 TO 6 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL IN
OTHERS.

JUNE 2011 RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THE FOUR MAIN CLIMATE SITES ACROSS
EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKINGS PROVIDED IF IN THE TOP
10):

-DAYTONA BEACH RECEIVED 12.29 INCHES OF RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH,
WHICH WAS 6.60 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 9TH WETTEST
JUNE ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

-ORLANDO RECEIVED 7.34 INCHES OF RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS
0.01 INCHES BELOW NORMAL.

-MELBOURNE RECEIVED 5.90 INCHES OF RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS
0.07 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL.

-VERO BEACH RECEIVED 3.16 INCHES OF RAINFALL, WHICH WAS 2.87 INCHES
