PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL
1053 PM EDT THU SEP 1 2011

...TEMPERATURES WERE WARMER THAN NORMAL WHILE RAINFALL WAS RIGHT
AROUND AVERAGE ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA DURING AUGUST 2011...

NUMEROUS FRONTAL BOUNDARIES IMPACTED THE AREA THROUGHOUT AUGUST...
CAUSING THE ATLANTIC HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE AXIS TO BE LOCATED SOUTH OF
EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA FOR MUCH OF THE MONTH. TEMPERATURES ENDED UP
BEING WARMER THAN AVERAGE FOR ALL LOCATIONS...WITH RECORD SETTING
HEAT AT VERO BEACH. AFTERNOON SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS
OCCURRED AREAWIDE ON A FAIRLY CONSISTENT BASIS...ALLOWING FOR NEAR
NORMAL RAINFALL AT MOST LOCATIONS.

.TEMPERATURES...

HIGHS GENERALLY RANGED FROM THE LOW TO MID 90S...WHILE OCCASIONALLY
RISING INTO THE UPPER 90S WHICH APPROACHED AND EVEN BROKE A FEW
DAILY RECORDS. OVERNIGHT LOWS WERE TYPICALLY IN THE MID 70S AND
NEVER FELL BELOW 72 DEGREES IN DAYTONA BEACH...ORLANDO...
MELBOURNE...OR VERO BEACH. SUBSEQUENTLY...WARMER THAN NORMAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURES WERE EXPERIENCED AT ALL 4 MAIN CLIMATE SITES...RANGING
FROM 1.5 TO JUST OVER 2.0 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THESE READINGS WERE
HIGH ENOUGH TO RANK EACH SITE IN THE TOP 10 WARMEST AUGUSTS ON
RECORD.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE VALUES FOR AUGUST AT THE FOUR MAIN CLIMATE
SITES ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKINGS PROVIDED
IF IN THE TOP 10):

-DAYTONA BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 83.3 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE
4TH WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.0 DEGREE ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE
8TH WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 2.1 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE

FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 2.0 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE
WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

.RAINFALL...

NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF EAST CENTRAL
FLORIDA DURING AUGUST. NUMEROUS FRONTAL BOUNDARIES AND A MORE
PERSISTENT UPPER LEVEL TROUGH IN THE VICINITY OF THE AREA...CAUSED
THE ATLANTIC HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE AXIS TO REMAIN SOUTH OF CENTRAL
FLORIDA. THIS ALLOWED FOR WESTERLY WINDS AND HIGH MOISTURE VALUES TO
PRODUCE SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ON AN ALMOST DAILY
BASIS. THE ATLANTIC HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE DID BUILD BACK TO THE NORTH
TOWARDS THE MIDDLE TO THE END OF THE MONTH...BUT HURRICANE IRENE
ERODED ITS WESTERN SIDE AS IT APPROACHED. RAINFALL AMOUNTS WERE NOT
OVERLY IMPRESSIVE FROM IRENE...BUT THEY DID HELP TO BRING MONTHLY
TOTALS TO NEAR OR ABOVE NORMAL. AFTER SOME DRIER AIR WORKED IN ON
THE BACKSIDE OF IRENE...ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL TROUGH BROUGHT
ADDITIONAL RAIN TO THE AREA FOR THE END OF THE MONTH.

MONTHLY PRECIPITATION TOTALS VARIED ACROSS THE AREA...BUT MOST
OBSERVING LOCATIONS REPORTED NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL. MOST
NOTABLY WERE VERO BEACH AND TITUSVILLE WHICH BOTH HAD TOTALS THAT
RANKED IN THEIR TOP 10 WETTEST AUGUSTS ON RECORD. HOWEVER A FEW
SPOTS DID COME IN DRIER THAN NORMAL...ESPECIALLY STUART WHICH
EXPERIENCED A DEFICIT OF NEARLY 4 INCHES. FOR THE MOST PART...THE
RAINFALL IN AUGUST HELPED BRING SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS TO DROUGHT
CONDITIONS OVER EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA.

AUGUST 2011 RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THE FOUR MAIN CLIMATE SITES ACROSS
EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKINGS PROVIDED IF IN THE TOP
10):

-DAYTONA BEACH RECEIVED 5.75 INCHES OF RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH, WHICH

0.19 INCHES BELOW NORMAL.

-VERO BEACH RECEIVED 11.48 INCHES OF RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH, WHICH
WAS 4.45 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 6TH WETTEST AUGUST
ON RECORD FOR THIS SITE.

-TITUSVILLE HAD THEIR 9TH WETTEST AUGUST ON RECORD.
