PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL
448 PM EDT TUE MAY 10 2011

...CLIMATE RECORDS FOR THE ORLANDO AREA HAVE BEEN EXTENDED BACK TO
1892...

DAILY CLIMATE RECORDS OF TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION FOR THE
ORLANDO AREA ORIGINALLY CAME FROM A COMBINATION OF WEATHER
OBSERVATIONS AT THE ORLANDO EXECUTIVE AND THE ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL
AIRPORTS. THE DATA FROM THESE TWO SOURCES WERE JOINED TOGETHER UNDER
A PROJECT CALLED "THREADEX" FOR THE PURPOSE OF CALCULATING DAILY
EXTREMES OF TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION. THE "THREADEX" PROJECT
ONLY USED THE CLIMATE DATA THAT HAD BEEN DIGITIZED AT THE
NATIONAL CLIMATIC DATA CENTER (NCDC) TO EXTEND THE RECORD AS FAR
BACK IN TIME AS POSSIBLE. IN THE CASE OF THE ORLANDO AREA
RECORD...THE DIGITAL DATA AVAILABLE EXTENDED BACK TO 1944 AT THE
ORLANDO MUNICIPAL (NOW EXECUTIVE) AIRPORT. CLIMATE DATA WERE THEN
PICKED UP AT THE MCCOY AIRFORCE BASE IN 1974 AND CONTINUED THROUGH
PRESENT DAY AS IT BECAME ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

NON-DIGITIZED ORIGINAL COPIES OF CO-OPERATIVE OBSERVER CLIMATE DATA
WERE RECENTLY FOUND ON THE NCDC SERVER FOR THE ORLANDO AREA. THIS
DATA SPANNED FROM JANUARY 1892 THROUGH MAY OF 1944 FROM SEVERAL
CO-OPERATIVE OBSERVER LOCATIONS IN THE ORLANDO AREA. WEATHER
OBSERVATIONS DURING THIS TIME FRAME USED THERMOMETERS EXPOSED IN
COTTON REGION SHELTERS AND RAIN CAUGHT IN THE STANDARD EIGHT INCH
GAGE. SINCE THIS DATA WAS NOT PART OF THE ORIGINAL ORLANDO
"THREADEX", THE DATA WAS PUT INTO DIGITAL FORM BY THE HMT/INTERN
STAFF AT NWSFO MELBOURNE AND THEN FORWARDED TO NCDC FOR CHECKING AND
APPROVAL. NCDC HAS GIVEN THEIR APPROVAL TO EXTEND THE ORLANDO AREA
PERIOD OF RECORD AND THEREFORE CLIMATE RECORDS AT THIS STATION NOW
EXTEND FROM JANUARY OF 1892 THROUGH THE PRESENT DAY.
