Research Page

Since beginning operations in 1990 as the first modernized National Weather Service (NWS) office in the nation, the Melbourne staff has taken part in many interesting and valuable research projects. The initial projects involved compiling climatologies of east-central Florida temperatures, rainfall, and severe weather events. The severe weather climatologies helped to define which "threats" posed the greatest danger to the lives and properties of local residents and visitors. Later research concentrated on improving the forecast and warning challenges associated with these primary threats; thunderstorms (specifically lightning), flooding associated with heavy tropical rainfall, marine impacts (rip currents, waterspouts, and severe storms), and tropical cyclone /  hybrid storm (combination of tropical and non-tropical characteristics) tornadoes. Currently, a top priority is local modeling and several studies have also been published on this topic. Many of these studies (and related presentations) are available in electronic form on this server, and can be accessed from the links below. Please email the study author(s) or NWS Melbourne Impact Meteorology Unit Program Leader for additional information
