...FLOOD TYPES...

DROWNINGS FROM FLOODS IN THE MID SOUTH OCCUR MOST EVERY YEAR FROM
SEVERAL TYPES OF FLOODS. THE VARIETY OF MID SOUTH STORMS...TOPOGRAPHY
AND RIVERS COMBINE TO CAUSE FLASH FLOODS AND RIVER FLOODS. ALSO...SOME
MID SOUTH RAINSTORMS ARE SO WIDESPREAD THAT THEY CREATE AREAL FLOODING.

A FLOOD IS DEFINED AS ANY HIGH FLOW...OVERFLOW...OR INUNDATION BY
WATER WHICH CAUSES OR THREATENS LIVES OR PROPERTY. THIS USUALLY
OCCURS WITH PROLONGED RAINFALL OVER SEVERAL DAYS OR INTENSE RAINFALL
OVER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME...CAUSING A RIVER OR STREAM TO OVERFLOW
AND FLOOD THE SURROUNDING AREA. OTHER FACTORS THAT CAN CAUSE OR
WORSEN FLOODING ARE MELTING SNOW IN THE WINTER AND EARLY
SPRING...THUNDERSTORMS IN THE SPRING AND SUMMER...AND HURRICANES
IN THE SUMMER AND FALL.

...FLASH FLOODS...

A FLASH FLOOD IS DEFINED AS A RAPID AND EXTREME FLOW OF HIGH WATER
INTO A NORMALLY DRY AREA...OR A RAPID WATER LEVEL RISE IN A STREAM OR
CREEK ABOVE A PREDETERMINED FLOOD LEVEL. ONGOING FLOODING CAN
INTENSIFY TO FLASH FLOODING IN CASES WHERE INTENSE RAINFALL RESULTS
IN A RAPID SURGE OF RISING FLOOD WATERS. COMMONLY IT OCCURS WITHIN
SIX HOURS OF A HEAVY RAIN EVENT. HOWEVER FLASH FLOODS CAN ALSO OCCUR
WITHIN HOURS OR EVEN MINUTES IF A DAM OR LEVEE FAILS OR TORRENTIAL
RAIN OCCURS ACROSS AN AFFECTED AREA. FLASH FLOODS CAN CATCH YOU OFF
GUARD AND UNPREPARED. YOU MAY ONLY HAVE A FEW MINUTES WARNING THAT
THESE DEADLY...SUDDEN FLOODS ARE COMING.

...RIVER FLOODING...

RIVERS FLOOD WHEN THE RIVER GETS OUT OF ITS BANKS. FLOOD WATER THEN
BEGINS TO SPREAD ONTO NORMALLY DRY AREAS AND RISES TO BE A DANGER TO
YOUR LIFE AND PROPERTY.

RIVER HEIGHT IS MEASURED BY GAGES AT MANY PLACES IN THE MID SOUTH.
THIS ENABLES THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MEMPHIS TO ANALYZE AND
PROJECT FLOOD RISK. FLOOD IMPACTS HAVE BEEN DERIVED FOR SEVERAL GAGES
IN THIS AREA. THESE IMPACTS ARE USED TO ACTUALLY TRIGGER THE CREATION
AND DISSEMINATION OF RIVER FLOOD WARNINGS.

ACTION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO AVOID RISK AND LOSS BEFORE FLOOD WATER
REACHES YOUR LOCATION. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUES A FLOOD
WARNING WHEN FLOOD WATER BEGINS TO AFFECT HOMES OR BUSINESSES OR WHEN
ROADS ARE EXPECTED TO FLOOD. THE START OF A RIVER FLOOD IS CALLED MINOR
FLOODING. ALTHOUGH CALLED MINOR...MINOR FLOODING IS A SERIOUS THREAT.
OF COURSE...NO FLOODING IS MINOR WHEN YOUR OWN HOME OR PROPERTY IS
INVOLVED.

MAJOR FLOODING OCCURS WITH EXTENSIVE INUNDATION OF STRUCTURES AND
ROADS. SIGNIFICANT EVACUATIONS OF PEOPLE AND TRANSFER OF PROPERTY TO
HIGHER ELEVATIONS MAY BECOME NECESSARY.

...AREAL FLOODS...

AREAL FLOODS ARE DIFFICULT TO VISUALIZE. ONE CAN THINK OF AREAL
FLOODS AS A SITUATION WHERE WATER COVERS MOST EVERYTHING IN AN AREA
THE SIZE OF A COUNTY. THE FLOOD WATER COMES FROM WIDESPREAD HEAVY
RAIN RIGHT OVER THE AREA AFFECTED RATHER THAN AN OVERFLOWING RIVER.
VISUALIZE A 10 INCH RAIN OVERNIGHT IN TUNICA COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI.
HUGH CHUNKS OF TUNICA COUNTY WILL BE AWASH...EVEN THE RIDGES. RUNOFF
EVENTUALLY THEN DRIANS INTO THE BAYOUS...CREEKS AND RIVERS MAKING
THEM FLOOD. ROADS...HOUSES...FARMSTEADS ALL CAN FLOOD IN THIS
SITUATION.

KNOWNING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLOODS...HOW TO PREPARE FOR THEM...
AND THE ACTIONS TO TAKE DURING...AND AFTERWARDS CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ENCOURAGES YOU TO BE FLOOD READY.
