...FLOOD AWARENESS AND SAFETY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS DECLARED MARCH 18 THROUGH MARCH 22
AS FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN
MEMPHIS WILL FEATURE A DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL TOPIC EACH DAY
DURING THIS WEEK. TODAYS TOPIC IS FLOOD AWARENESS AND SAFETY.

...STAY FLOOD AWARE...

FLOODS KILL NINETY-FIVE PEOPLE EACH YEAR ON AVERAGE IN THE UNITED
STATES. YOU CAN COUNT ON ACCIDENTAL DROWNINGS EVERY YEAR SOMEWHERE IN
WEST TENNESSEE...NORTH MISSISSIPPI...THE MISSOURI BOOTHEEL...OR
EASTERN ARKANSAS. THE MAJORITY OF THESE DROWNINGS IN THE MID SOUTH ARE
IN VEHICLES AND CAN BE AVOIDED.

EVERY FLOOD IS DANGEROUS AND IT FLOODS SOMEWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES
OR ITS TERRITORIES NEARLY EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. FLOODS HAPPEN DAY OR
NIGHT. SWIFT WATER ONLY 4 INCHES DEEP CAN SWEEP A VECHILE INTO RAGING
RIVERS. YOUR CHANCE OF SURVIVAL OFTEN IS MUCH LOWER ONCE YOUR CAR OR
TRUCK IS CARRIED INTO DANGEROUS WATER.

KNOW THAT EVERY FLOOD IS DIFFERENT. YOU CAN NOT COUNT ON FLOODED
ROADS OR BRIDGES. A ROAD MAY LOOK SAFE BUT MAY BE TOTALLY WASHED OUT.
FLASH FLOODS CAN BRING A WALL OF WATER DOWN A STREAM. YOU SHOULD
PRESUME FLASH FLOODS COMING DOWN A STREAM PROBABLY HAVE ALREADY
PICKED UP LOGS...HOUSES...BOULDERS AND OTHER DEBRIS. THESE OBJECTS
CAN BE FATAL.

...STAY FLOOD SAFE...

ARE YOU FLOOD READY? YOUR SAFETY FROM FLOODS ULTIMATELY IS YOUR OWN
RESPONSIBILITY. WISDOM SAYS PLAN AHEAD AND STAY SAFE. THEN...BE READY
TO EXECUTE YOUR FLOOD EVACUATION PLANS. MANY TIMES...YOU CAN
EVACUTATE WELL AHEAD OF FLOODS. YOU ARE IN MUCH GREATER DANGER IF YOU
HAVE TO BE EXTRACTED FROM FLOODS RATHER THAN EVACUATING BEFORE FLOODS
COME.

KNOWING FLOODS ARE DANGEROUS CAN HELP YOU STAY SAFE. MOVING WATER IS
EXTREMELY POWERFUL. ONCE IN WATER...YOU ARE NOT REALLY IN CONTROL
ANYMORE. THERE ARE MANY LIFE SAVING FLOOD SAFETY TIPS. AN EASY ONE TO
REMEMBER IS TO GET OUT OF FLOOD WATER AND STAY OUT. "TURN AROUND
DON'T DROWN" IS ANOTHER EXCELLENT TIP TO STAY FLOOD SAFE WHEN
DRIVING.

MANY PROVEN FLOOD SAFETY TIPS CAN BE FOUND ON THE INTERNET USING THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WEBSITE HTTP://WWW.FLOODSAFETY.NOAA.GOV.
TIPS PROVIDED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAVE BEEN TESTED OVER
TIME. IF YOU FOLLOW THESE TIPS YOU WILL HAVE A HIGH CHANCE OF STAYING
FLOOD SAFE.

LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICES CONSTANTLY MONITOR
WEATHER AND RIVERS. FLOOD WARNINGS ARE ISSUED WHERE NEEDED. ANYONE
CAN OBTAIN NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLOOD WARNINGS. PRIVATE RADIO
AND TV STATIONS MAKE SPECIAL BROADCASTS OF FLOOD INFORMATION.
WARNINGS ARE ALSO BROADCAST OVER THE PUBLIC WEATHER NETWORK AND NOAA
WEATHER RADIO. MIDSOUTH FLOOD WARNINGS ARE ALSO DISSEMINATED
WORLD WIDE ON THE INTERNET VIA PERSONAL COMPUTERS OR CELL PHONES.
