SUBJECT: Discontinuance of Colorado River Forecast Point near Ira,
Texas, effective Dec 15, 2015.

Effective Tuesday, December 15, 2015, the National Weather
Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Midland/Odessa,
Texas, in cooperation with the West Gulf River Forecast Center
(WGRFC) in Fort Worth, Texas, will be discontinuing the Colorado
River Forecast Point near Ira, Texas (IRAT2) on 15 December 2015.
The gage site was established 4 miles southwest of Ira, Texas at
the State Highway 350 bridge by the USGS in 1947, before J.B.
Thomas Reservoir was impounded. It was discontinued as a river
gage site by the USGS in 1989, although it has remained a river
forecast point to the present.

With no automated river gage present, and no regular streamflow
measurements conducted by the USGS, accurate river forecasts are
no longer possible at IRAT2. Additionally, the Colorado River is
controlled 5 miles upstream of IRAT2 by J.B. Thomas Reservoir, and
is obsolete as a river forecast point.
