Fire Weather Planning Forecast FOR West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
Nantional Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
335 AM CST Fri Feb 24 2017

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT THIS MORNING THROUGH THIS EVENING FOR
WINDY AND VERY DRY CONDITIONS ALONG AND WEST OF THE PECOS RIVER AS
WELL AS SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO AND FAR NORTHWEST PERMIAN BASIN...

.DISCUSSION...
RH recovery has been poor across most areas overnight and although
temperatures will be cooler today, west/northwest winds will pump
very dry air into the region and minimum RH/s will quickly drop to
5-10 percent areawide. Critical fire weather conditions are expected
to develop across Southeast NM, far northwest Permian Basin and
south of the Pecos River with wind speeds near 20 to 25 mph
sustained through the afternoon. A cold front will backdoor into the
area tonight, which will allow for good recovery over the Permian
Basin, but poor elsewhere. Otherwise, critical fire weather
conditions look to return Sunday.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast FOR West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
Nantional Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
807 PM CST Thu Feb 23 2017

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY
EVENING FOR WINDY AND VERY DRY CONDITIONS ALONG AND WEST OF THE
PECOS RIVER, AND OVER THE SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO PLAINS AND NORTHWEST
PERMIAN BASIN...

.DISCUSSION...

Westerly winds will continue to diminish this evening, and RH will
slowly increase. Since critical fire weather conditions are not
expected the rest of the night, the Red Flag Warning has been
allowed to expire. Recovery overnight will be poor in most areas.
Temperatures will be cooler Friday, but west to northwest winds will
pump very dry air into the region, and minimum RH/s Friday afternoon
will be 5-10 percent areawide. Since westerly winds will be near 20-
25 mph sustained along and south of the Pecos River, and over the
northwest Permian Basin, will continue the Fire Weather Watch for
Friday, but add all of southwest Texas. A cold front will backdoor
into the area Friday night, which will allow for good recovery over
the Permian Basin, but poor elsewhere. Near critical fire weather
conditions could occur south and west of the Pecos River Saturday
afternoon.

...RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM CST /7 PM MST/
THIS EVENING FOR RELATIVE HUMIDITY OF 15% OR LESS, 20 FOOT WINDS
OF 20 MPH OR MORE, AND HIGH TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER FOR SOUTHEAST

GUADALUPE, DAVIS, AND APACHE MOUNTAINS, SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO,
GAINES COUNTY, VAN HORN AND THE HIGHWAY 54 CORRIDOR, AND REEVES

.DISCUSSION...

Strong, gusty west winds are occurring across Southeast New
Mexico and most of West Texas this afternoon. With relative
humidity near or below 10 percent, and high to extreme Fire Danger
due to record- breaking temperatures 15-20 degrees above normal,
critical fire weather conditions are expected through early
evening. RH recovery overnight and Friday night will be only poor
to moderate. A cold front will bring cooler temperatures Friday,
but very dry air will remain in place and gusty winds behind the
front could result in critical fire weather conditions across
Southeast New Mexico, the Guadalupe, Davis, and Apache Mountains,
and the adjacent plains. RH will bottom out at 5-15% Friday
afternoon, and 10-20% Saturday. Critical fire weather conditions
will be possible again Sunday through Tuesday of next week.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast FOR West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
Nantional Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
426 AM CST Thu Feb 23 2017

...RED FLAG WARNING TODAY FOR WARM, DRY, VERY WINDY, AND VERY
HIGH TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER ACROSS MOST AREAS...

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH FRIDAY FOR WARM, DRY, VERY WINDY, AND VERY
HIGH FIRE DANGER ACROSS SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO...THE EXTREME
NORTHWESTERN PERMIAN BASIN...UPPER TRANS PECOS...AND DAVIS
MOUNTAINS...

.DISCUSSION...
Extremely critical fire weather conditions are still expected across
much of the area today as an upper level trough moves across the
Rockies. This trough will increase west winds today before veering
from the northwest tonight as a cold front moves through the area.
Overnight recovery will be fair to poor. The front will bring cooler
temperatures tomorrow, but very dry air will still remain and winds
behind the front will reach 20 mph in southeast New Mexico, the
Guadalupe and Davis Mountains and adjacent plains so have issued a
Fire Weather Watch. A second shot of cooler air arrives Friday night
ending the critical fire weather threat for at least a day before
winds begin to increase again Sunday.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast FOR West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
Nantional Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
858 PM CST Wed Feb 22 2017

...RED FLAG WARNING THURSDAY FOR WARM, DRY, AND VERY WINDY CONDITIONS
ACROSS SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO AND MUCH OF WEST TEXAS...

.DISCUSSION...

The Red Flag Warning for the Guadalupe Mountains this evening has been
allowed to expire as winds have decreased, and RH/s increased. However,
high end fire weather conditions are likely Thursday across much of the area,
especially over southeast New Mexico and the northern Permian Basin. The
pattern for Thursday is of particular concern as the multiple occurence of
large fires have occured on similar days. Fire danger ratings of very high
to extreme are expected as temperatures warm 15-20 degrees above normal.
Fuels have been drying out, especially the 1hr and 10hr fuels, and are
readily available to burn. A Red Flag Warning is already in effect for
Thursday, followed by poor recovery areawide tonight. More critical fire
weather is expected Friday, and perhaps Sunday and Tuesday.

product issued by the Midland/Odessa National Weather Service Office.
