Fire Weather Planning Forecast for New Mexico and Far West Texas
National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM
203 PM MDT Tue May 23 2017

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
THURSDAY EVENING...

.DISCUSSION...
An upper ridge will be building into the region over the next day
and bring some of the warmest temperatures of the year with some
lowland locations getting into the upper 90s. As ridge weakens and
shifts east, west-southwest flow aloft will become established and
increase the surface winds to 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts. With
relative humidities falling into the 5 to 10 percent range,
extremely critical fire conditions are expected Thursday and Friday.
Winds will be decreasing Saturday but remain breezy. As a weak
trough becomes established around the Baja region, some Gulf
moisture will get drawn up and increase humidities and thunderstorm
chances for the beginning of next week.

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
THURSDAY EVENING...

.DISCUSSION...
A couple of critical fire weather days are coming by the end of
the week, but first we will have a couple of pleasant days
although winds may still make it near 20 mph in the late
afternoon. A weak cold front will move across the area today which
will swing our winds around to the north and shave a few degrees
off our high temperatures. It won`t last long as an upper level
ridge will build across New Mexico on Wednesday to give us very
warm temperatures. But by Thursday and again on Friday we will see
strong surface winds develop. Combine those winds with our single
digit RH`s and we will see Red Flag conditions on both Thursday
and Friday afternoons. We will see calmer, but continued very dry
conditions for both Saturday and Sunday. Late on Sunday moisture
will begin to move back into the area and we will see a chance for
rain on both Monday and Tuesday. Min RH`s will run in the single
digits to near 10% today through the coming weekend, but by the
start of next week we will see min RH`s climb a little above 15%
in the lowlands and above 30% in the mountains.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast for New Mexico and Far West Texas
National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM
201 PM MDT Mon May 22 2017

.DISCUSSION...
Breezy conditions expected each afternoon through Wednesday but
speeds should remain below critical criteria. Besides the next 24
hours when some eastern zones may keep humidities above 15 to 20
percent, expect them to fall into the 5 to 15 percent range through
the next week with some of the warmest temperatures of the year
coming Wednesday and Thursday. Winds will be increasing for
Thursday and Friday to 20 to 30 mph or stronger which will combine
with the low RH`s and create likely critical conditions. Winds
decrease for the holiday weekend but will still remain breezy. With
the strong winds however, vent rates will generally remain
excellent.

.DISCUSSION...
A little moisture has made its way into the area and that will
help fuel a few isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening,
mainly east of the Rio Grande. By Tuesday the moisture will have
moved back to the east and we will see sunny and very warm weather
through the end of the week. A weak approaching upper level storm
system will give us breezy to windy conditions on Thursday and
again on Friday. Very dry air will be in place so many locations
in the Lowlands both Thursday and Friday will be near or exceed
Red Flag conditions. The weekend will be sunny and dry, but winds
will not be a factor. Looking at our min RH`s this week, despite
the moisture trying to move in, most Lowland locations will see
single digit RH`s this afternoon, with the mountains "only"
dropping to near 20%. The rest of the week will see very dry
conditions with lowlands in the single digits and the mountains
in the low to mid teens. Moisture will perhaps try and make a
return for the start of next week.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast for New Mexico and Far West Texas
National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM
242 PM MDT Sun May 21 2017

.DISCUSSION...
Moisture will continue to surge west into the region this
afternoon/evening. This moisture intrusion will bring the chance for
showers and thunderstorms to most fire weather zones through
Tuesday. The best chances for rain will be east of the river and in
area mountains, with the greatest areal coverage tonight (extending
as far west as the divide). The main threat with these storms will
be lightning and strong outflow gusts. Tuesday northwest will take
over ushering out any residual moisture. Wednesday into Thursday all
fire weather zones will be under an upper level ridge that will
bring dry weather and very warm afternoon high temperatures. Next
weekend W to SW flow aloft will keep the area warm and dry. Min RH
values will increase somewhat today associated with the moisture
surge but they will quickly drop back into critical thresholds by
mid week. Winds will remain below critical conditions until
Thursday. Thus, Red Flag conditions might be met late in the week.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast for New Mexico and Far West Texas
National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM
710 AM MDT Sun May 21 2017

.DISCUSSION...
Today a surge in moisture enters the region bringing a chance for
some showers and thunderstorms through Tuesday. The best chances
for rain will be east of the river and in area mountains, with the
greatest areal coverage tonight (extending as far west as the
divide). The main threat with these storms will be lightning and
strong outflow gusts. Tuesday through the end of next week a ridge
begins to build over the area bringing drier air and very warm
afternoon high temperatures. Winds will remain below critical
conditions until possibly Thursday. Min RH values will increase
somewhat today associated with the moisture surge before dropping
back into critical thresholds by late week.
