Fire Weather Planning Forecast for New Mexico and Far West Texas
National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM
643 AM MST Sun Feb 19 2017

.DISCUSSION...
Upper low/trough will be moving across the region over the next
24 hours. Scattered rain and snow showers will redevelop during
the day, especially in the mountains and west. This afternoon
there will be added instability which will allow for the
development of isolated thunderstorms. Winds will be westerly
around 10-20 mph behind a Pacific cold front today. Temperatures
will be nearly 10 degrees cooler and RH will be much higher. The
storm exits early Monday with dry conditions returning for all of
the week. Temperatures will gradually warm through midweek with
Wednesday temperatures 10-12 degrees above normal. Thursday will
bring a strong wind event as a Pacific storm system passes to our
north. With very dry air in place, a significant critical fire
weather day looks likely across the region.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast for New Mexico and Far West Texas
National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM
644 AM MST Sat Feb 18 2017

.DISCUSSION...
Winds slacken a bit today as the next Pacific storm system
approaches from the west. Increased moisture will keep the region
mostly cloudy through the weekend. Today rain will remain over
far SW New Mexico this afternoon. A bit of instability will allow
for a very isolated thunderstorm over the Gila high country. This
evening and overnight, the upper trough will approach and
introduce precipitation chances to the region. Rain chances will
spread from west to east and extend area wide by Sunday. Increased
instability will allow for increased thunderstorm chances as well.
Snow levels will drop to around 6000 ft over the west late
tonight. More snow is expected over the Gila than the Sacs. Only
1-3" of snow in the Sacs...3-6" of snow above 7000 ft in the Gila.
The storm exits early Monday. Next week brings another round of
dry and calm weather as a ridge settles in over the region. Next
HEADS-UP DAY will come Thursday with very dry and windy conditions
bringing a likely RED FLAG day to the area.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast for New Mexico and Far West Texas
National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM
203 PM MST Fri Feb 17 2017

.DISCUSSION...
Main fire weather concern for the day will be strong winds
brought by the development of a surface trough in the southern
plains and the approach of an upper level storm system. Wind
speeds will increase through the day between 15 to 25 mph,
especially for the southern and mountainous fire weather zones. By
Saturday night the upper trough will introduce precipitation
chances into the forecast with showers and a few isolated
thunderstorms in the lowlands, and with snow showers above 8000ft
in the mountains. After this dry and calm weather is expected
across the region as a ridge settles in. However, another wind
event is expected towards the end of next week. Max vent rates
should improves the next few days due to the upper low, and mostly
remain in healthy conditions through the period.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast for New Mexico and Far West Texas
National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM
657 AM MST Fri Feb 17 2017

.DISCUSSION...
Today the main fire weather concern will be strong winds brought
on by the development of a surface trough in the southern plains
and an approaching upper level storm system. Today wind speeds
will increase between 15 to 25 mph with gusts around 30 mph,
especially for the southern and mountainous fire weather zones. As
a result over the next few days max vent rates will improve due
to the upper low and increased wind speeds. Saturday night the
upper trough will introduce precipitation chances area wide with
rain showers and a few isolated thunderstorms in the lowlands, and
snow showers above 8000ft in the mountains. Thus, min RH values
will also increase over the weekend. Dry and calm weather is
expected next week as a ridge settles in over the region. Another
wind event is possible towards the end of next week.
