On this day in 1966, an extremely violent F5 tornado ripped through parts of Jackson Mississippi during the late afternoon. 12 people were killed and 100 injured as a shopping center was virtually destroyed. 1000 homes were damaged and 19 killed in Hinds County, mostly in Jackson. Another 6 died in Rankin County, 26 died in rural Scott County and 6 died in Leake County. Total storm related fatalities were 57 with 504 injured. Damage was set at 18 million dollars.
