Light Snow on December 26, 2007 |
 |
| |
 |
For those wanting a white Christmas, it did not happen.
But a day later, that all changed. A very intense storm system tracked
just to the south of Arkansas on December 26th, with precipitation
spreading across the state during the morning hours. |
| In the
picture: The pattern at 1200 pm CST on 12/26/2007, with a storm system
("L") in western Louisiana and precipitation spreading across
Arkansas. Snow was occurring in the higher elevations of the west. |
|
| In the picture:
The forecast sounding (i.e. a temperature and dewpoint profile with
height) at 600 am CST on 12/26/2007 showed a lot of dry air in
place (i.e. a large temperature/dewpoint spread). Precipitation
had not yet begun. |
|
|
| In the picture: By
1200 pm CST, precipitation moistened the atmosphere (i.e. little
to no temperature/dewpoint spread)...with cooling aloft (and a
lower freezing level). |
|
|
| Initially, there was a lot of dry air aloft.
Once moisture fell through this dry air, rapid cooling took place
overhead (i.e. due to evaporation)...making it easier for ice to form.
In most areas, this led to rain with a brief period of sleet and/or
snow. There was brief
heavy sleet and/or snow in some spots, especially where isolated thunderstorms
popped up. West of Hot Springs (Garland County), roads became slushy...with
a fatal accident reported. |
| Farther north and west, freezing levels dropped enough
aloft for more persistent snow in the higher elevations of northern and western Arkansas. Interestingly
enough, the snow fell with mostly above freezing temperatures at ground level. |

The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed rain and sleet in central
Arkansas at 102 pm CST on 12/26/2007, with mainly snow farther north and
west. |
 |
One to two inches of snow fell from Mena (Polk
County) and Mount Ida (Montgomery County) to Waldron (Scott County),
Danville (Yell County), Clinton (Van Buren County), Deer (Newton County),
Mountain View (Stone County) and Cherokee Village (Sharp County). |

| There was locally up to three inches
of snow, with five inches at Mount Magazine (Logan County). Snow tapered
off from the southwest during the evening hours. |
