Winter Weather (Jan 31-Feb 1, 2007)

Snow and sleet spread across roughly the northern half of Arkansas on January 31st. One to two inch snow accumulations were common, mainly north and west of Little Rock (Pulaski County). Some areas had up to three inches. The precipitation ended during the evening, with a few snow flurries or patchy freezing drizzle remaining. While round one was over, round two was yet to come.
In the picture: The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed moisture that led to snow/sleet on 01/31/2007 (Round #1) had moved into the southeast United States by 928 am CST on 02/01/2007. However, additional moisture loomed to the southwest...with more wintry precipitation on the way (Round #2).

A temperature profile with height showed below freezing air from the ground up from Little Rock (Pulaski County) northward as of 12 pm CST on 02/01/2007.
In the picture: A temperature profile with height showed below freezing air from the ground up from Little Rock (Pulaski County) northward as of 12 pm CST on 02/01/2007. Mainly snow fell in these areas. Farther south, above freezing air aloft (around 5000 feet) led to melting...with a mix of rain and sleet (and eventually some snow as temperatures aloft cooled).
Moisture spread across the region from the southwest during the evening hours of February 1st. This time, snow and sleet affected areas a little farther south...including much of central and parts of southern Arkansas.

There was not quite as much snow this time. Even so, accumulations of an inch or less occurred...with locally up to two inches. Snowfall for the event of January 31-February 1, 2007.

The scenario at 6 am CST on 02/01/2007. This cold weather pattern will not end anytime soon. A northwest wind flow aloft will bring several rounds of Arctic air into the state through the early part of February.
In the picture: The scenario at 6 am CST on 02/01/2007. A northwest wind flow aloft was bringing Arctic air into the state. Meanwhile, a southwest wind flow aloft ahead of a storm system ("L") was bringing moisture into Arkansas...with chances for wintry precipitation.
