Winter Weather on January 31, 2008
 
The pattern at 6 pm CST on 01/31/2008. A storm system formed in the Texas panhandle on the 30th (Wednesday). Clouds increased ahead of the system, with widespread precipitation on the 31st (Thursday).
In the picture: The pattern at 6 pm CST on 01/31/2008...with an intensifying storm system in Mississippi and snow falling in northern and western Arkansas. Precipitation temporarily ended elsewhere with dry slotting from the southwest.

 

Heavy snow developed in the northern counties, with a mix in central sections. The mix mostly occurred during the morning/early afternoon, with a gradual changeover to rain. The changeover was slowest in northeast Arkansas. In southern sections of the state, rain and scattered thunderstorms occurred. Expected precipitation types on 01/31/2008.

The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed precipitation tapering off from the west at 1208 pm CST on 01/31/2008. Heading into the afternoon of the 31st, the system in Texas tracked along the Gulf Coast and into central Mississippi. The system pulled drier air in from the southwest...with precipitation tapering off in most areas.
In the picture: The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed precipitation tapering off from the west at 1208 pm CST on 01/31/2008. There was additional moisture in Oklahoma set to move into Arkansas.

 

By evening, colder air and additional moisture wrapped around the system. The moisture built into Arkansas from Oklahoma, with light snow redeveloping in about the northern half of the state.

 

Overall, snowfall exceeded 4 inches toward the Missouri border...with up to an inch of snow as far south as Danville (Yell County) and Jonesboro (Craighead County). Snowfall on 01/31/2008.
