Severe Weather on August 17-18, 2007 (Pg1) |

High pressure began to weaken a bit on August 17th, with a
cold front allowed to sag into northern Arkansas from Missouri. A few
thunderstorms developed along the front during the afternoon, with
severe weather in Fulton County. |
| In the picture:
High pressure ("H") built over Arkansas in late July/early
August, 2007...with hot and dry weather and worsening drought
conditions. |
| The storms were noted during the heat of the afternoon,
with hot and dry weather across much of the state. Temperatures were
mostly in the mid 90s to just over 100 degrees. |

The satellite showed isolated storms in Fulton and Sharp Counties
(northern Arkansas) along a front during the afternoon of 08/17/2007. |

| In the pictures:
Vertically integrated liquid (VIL) values peaked between 55 and
60 kg/m2 before storms collapsed (producing damaging winds) near
Salem and Camp (both in Fulton County) on 08/17/2007. VIL values
increase as moisture deepens (vertically) in developing
storms...with severe weather becoming more likely. |

| The storms moved slowly northward through Fulton County,
with damaging winds reported around Salem (Fulton County) and near Camp
(Fulton County). Trees and power lines were downed in both areas between
3 and 4 pm CDT. |

There was also very heavy rainfall. In less than an hour,
some areas around Salem (Fulton County) received more than 2 inches of
rain. |
