Severe Weather on August 13, 2007

High pressure ("H") built over Arkansas in late July/early August, 2007. Very hot temperatures (mostly in the 100 to105 degree range) were noted in Arkansas heading into mid-August. A large dome of high pressure was not only creating dangerous heat, there was little to no rain. Even so, a thunderstorm or two popped up in northern sections of the state during the afternoon of the 13th.

With storms on radar, the concern for damaging winds increases as temperatures go up. That is because when moisture is introduced to a hot and dry atmosphere, a lot of evaporation occurs aloft which causes rapid cooling. Cooling air tends to sink, with a downward acceleration as more cooling takes place.
The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed a thunderstorm approaching Cave City (Sharp/Independence County line) from the northeast during the late afternoon of 08/13/2007.

The storm rapidly weakened as it moved just south of town, which was an indication that it had just collapsed. Storms that are weakening or collapsing have an overall downward motion created by falling precipitation and strong to damaging winds.

At Cave City (Sharp/Independence County line), this cooling process created wind gusts over 70 mph. Numerous trees and power poles were downed, with damage to several homes in the area.
