Heavy Rain on September 4-9, 2007 (Pg1)

The pattern on 09/06/2007. Drought conditions worsened quickly in August, with less than an inch of rain common in northern and eastern Arkansas. However, much needed rain arrived in early September.
In the picture: The pattern on 09/06/2007...with a system aloft ("L") departing Arkansas with heavy rain, and a new cold front on the horizon (to the north) with more precipitation.

On the 4th, showers and thunderstorms became widespread over the northern half of Arkansas ahead of a storm system in the Plains. One to two inches of rain occurred in some areas, with locally more. During the early morning hours of the 5th, a new area of precipitation expanded over southwest sections of the state.

Specific amounts on the 4th/early on the 5th included 2.28 inches at Antoine (Pike County), 2.20 inches at Jessieville (Garland County), 2.08 inches at Georgetown (White County), 2.02 inches at the Stuttgart Airport (Prairie County), 1.61 inches at Mount Ida (Montgomery County), 1.60 inches at Searcy (White County), and 1.53 inches at the Hot Springs National Park (Garland County).

One of the reasons for all of the rain was a high precipitable water content in the atmosphere. Values were over 2 inches across much of the state...with normals between 1 and 1.5 inches. With well above normal moisture available, rainfall was produced more efficiently...with a concern for flash flooding.
Precipitable water values were well above normal on 09/05/2007.

The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed precipitation increasing from the southwest early on 09/05/2007.
The rain in southwest Arkansas early on the 5th spread eastward as the day progressed. Again, very heavy rainfall occurred...with some amounts over 2 inches.

In Little Rock (Pulaski County), there was 2.47 inches of rain...with 2.98 inches at North Little Rock (Pulaski County). These totals set rainfall records for the date, and widespread street flooding resulted. Similar amounts were noted farther east through portions of Lonoke, Prairie, Arkansas, and Monroe Counties.    Rainfall on September 4-5, 2007.
