Severe Weather in May, 2003

 

May, 2003 Events
 
Several waves of severe weather affected Arkansas during the first two weeks of May, with close to three dozen tornadoes spawned. The weather pattern was relentless, with strong storm systems dragging cold fronts into Arkansas from the Plains. The fronts would then stall before moving back to the north. The departing fronts were replaced by warm, moist and unstable air from the Gulf Coast region (fuel for developing storms). The fronts would depart just in time for the arrival of new cold fronts from the west.  For a detailed look at events in May, click on the links below.
 
May 1-3, 2003 (including tornadoes in Polk, Scott and Montgomery Counties)
May 4-5, 2003 (including significant damage in Faulkner, Lonoke, White and Woodruff Counties)
May 6-8, 2003 (including a few weak tornadoes in southern Arkansas)
May 10-11, 2003 (including a small tornado in Jackson County)
May 13-14, 2003 (including some wind damage from western into central Arkansas)
May 16, 2003 (including numerous tornadoes and flash flooding)
