Cold Weather in Early April, 2007 |
 |
| |
 |
A northwest wind flow developed over the region in early
April. Arctic high pressure slowly built toward Arkansas, with below
freezing temperatures across northern sections of the state during the
early morning hours of the 5th through the 9th. Readings reached the freezing mark
into central and parts of southern Arkansas early on the 7th/8th. |

|
| In some areas, this was the coldest air ever felt
in April. In Little Rock (Pulaski County), the temperature reached 28
degrees on the 8th. This tied the all-time record low for the
month last set on April 7, 1971. The 8th was the coldest morning, with
much of the state in the 10s and 20s...and below freezing for more than
six hours. |

| These well below normal temperatures came on the heels of a much warmer
than normal March...which kicked off the growing season a little early.
This made it especially stressful to
outdoor vegetation. |

 |
It could have been colder if not for some high
clouds building over the state from the southwest. The clouds acted as a
blanket, and kept readings up a few degrees...especially in southern
sections of the state. The clouds surrounded a storm system, with
thicker clouds and snow in parts of Texas on the 7th/early on the 8th. |

| While this round of subfreezing air came a little later than usual, there have
been later freezes in the past. In Little Rock (Pulaski County), the
latest freeze occurred on April 19th (of 1983)...with parts of the north
experiencing a freeze as late as mid-May. |
