Silver Medal (Jan 1999 Tornado Outbreaks) |

The January 21st, 1999 Tornado
Outbreak was the largest outbreak on record in
Arkansas...with a total of 56 tornadoes spawned statewide. Four days earlier, 7 tornadoes
swept across a two county area of northeast Arkansas. Timely and accurate Tornado Warnings
were issued during both events by the National Weather Service Forecast Office in North
Little Rock (NWSFO LIT)...saving the lives of many. Only 8 people were killed
overall. For its actions, NWSFO LIT was awarded the
prestigious Department of Commerce Silver Medal Award! |

| On January 6, 2000...a special ceremony was held addressing the Silver
Medal Award, with welcoming remarks by Renee R. Fair, the Meteorologist-in-Charge (MIC) at
NWSFO LIT. |

The ceremony was attended by NWSFO LIT staff members and their families,
distinguished guests and the media. |
| After explaining the significance of the Silver Medal Award and discussing
the tornadoes of January, 1999 and the actions of NWSFO LIT...the award was proudly given
to the NWSFO LIT staff and to the people of Arkansas. |

distinguished guests...including the Honorable Vic Snyder, U.S. House of
Representatives. |
