August 2007 Storm Report |
 |
| |
| Short Weather Summary |
| |
| It
was one of the hottest and driest Augusts on record in
Arkansas...especially across the northeast half of the state. High
pressure built over the region from the west, with rain shutting off and
100 degree temperatures becoming common. |
|
| There were several high temperature record tied or broken
in mid-August. In all, there were ten records at five reporting
stations. Check
the records below... |

|
High pressure over much of the southern United States
forced storm systems to go well north of Arkansas in August. As a
result, less than an inch of rain fell in northern and eastern sections
of the state...with some spots receiving no precipitation at all. Also
in the north and east, average temperatures were more than five degrees
above normal...with temperatures over 95 degrees nearly every
day. |
|
In the picture: High pressure ("H") built over
Arkansas in late July/early August, 2007...with hot and dry weather and
worsening drought conditions. |
| In the end...areas such as Harrison (Boone County), Little Rock
(Pulaski County) and West Memphis (Crittenden County) had a Top 5
warmest and driest August. Drought conditions worsened quickly in these
areas (and in much of northern and eastern Arkansas).
In the southwest half of the state, more ground water (from heavy
rain in July) kept temperatures from getting so hot. Also, toward the
end of August...rain managed to built into the area with 2 inches or
more in Fayetteville (Washington County) and El Dorado (Union
County). |

| As far as severe weather/heavy rain, it was spotty and
occurred mostly during the latter half of August. Wind damage was
reported at Cave City (Sharp/Independence County line) on the 13th, at
Salem (Fulton County) on the 17th and near Monticello (Drew County) on
the 25th. |
| In the Tropics |
| |
| The tropics became more active in August. Hurricane Dean
tracked though the Caribbean Sea (just south of Jamaica) to the Yucatan
Peninsula (just north of Belize) and eventually into southern Mexico (not
far from Veracruz) from the 13th through the 22nd. Tropical Storm Erin
formed in the western Gulf of Mexico and affected the Texas Gulf Coast on
August 16th. The remnants of Erin produced flooding rain in Texas and
Oklahoma. At the end of the month, Hurricane Felix emerged and was taking
a course similar to Dean in early September. |
