...ARKANSAS CHRISTMAS CLIMATOLOGY...

RECORDED WEATHER HISTORY BEGAN IN ARKANSAS IN 1819. DURING THIS
TIME...ARKANSAS HAS SEEN A WIDE RANGE OF WEATHER EXTREMES ON
CHRISTMAS.

THE FIRST YEAR OF SETTLEMENT...1819...SAW A WHITE CHRISTMAS AT
ARKANSAS POST.

HEAVY RAINFALL HAS BEEN SEEN A NUMBER OF TIMES...BUT MOST ABUNDANTLY
IN 1987...AND MOST RECENTLY IN 2009. IN 1987...WEST MEMPHIS RECORDED
7.25 INCHES OF RAINFALL ON CHRISTMAS DAY.

WARM WEATHER IS NOT UNCOMMON...AND AFFECTED MUCH OF THE STATE ON
CHRISTMAS 1942...1955...1971 AND 1982. IN 1955...HIGH TEMPERATURES
ON CHRISTMAS DAY REACHED THE 80S IN PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN
ARKANSAS...WITH ALUM FORK TOPPING OUT AT 84 DEGREES.

CHRISTMAS MORNING OF 1982 SAW THE END OF A THREE-DAY PERIOD WHERE 29
TORNADOES WERE REPORTED.

EXTREME COLD HAS OCCURRED A NUMBER OF TIMES...BUT PROBABLY THE
COLDEST CHRISTMAS EVER WAS IN 1983. AT THAT TIME...THE STATE WAS IN
THE GRIP OF A PERSISTENT ARCTIC OUTBREAK. ICE FORMED ON THE ARKANSAS
RIVER...AND LITTLE ROCK HAD BEEN BELOW FREEZING SINCE DECEMBER 18TH.
WIND CHILLS ON CHRISTMAS MORNING IN LITTLE ROCK APPROACHED -20
DEGREES...WHILE AT HARRISON THEY FELL TO -30 DEGREES. THE LOW AT
DEER IN NEWTON COUNTY ON CHRISTMAS MORNING FELL TO -13 DEGREES...
WHILE NEWPORT FELL TO -17.

IN 1962...LIGHT SNOW OCCURRED IN A LARGE PART OF THE STATE.

IN 1975...HEAVY SNOW FELL IN NORTHERN ARKANSAS...AND WESTERN ARKANSAS
WITH 12 INCHES AT BUFFALO TOWER IN NEWTON COUNTY...AND 14 INCHES AT
WALDRON IN SCOTT COUNTY.

IN 2000...THE SECOND MAJOR ICE STORM IN TWO WEEKS BEGAN...WITH
DAMAGE EXCEEDING THAT OF AN ICE STORM TWO WEEKS EARLIER. MORE THAN
300000 PEOPLE LOST ELECTRICITY...WITH HOT SPRINGS...LITTLE ROCK AND
SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS THE HARDEST HIT.

IN 2012...RAIN BEGAN AROUND MID MORNING...AND MIXED WITH FREEZING
RAIN AND SLEET DURING MUCH OF THE DAY. THIS RESULTED IN ICE
ACCUMULATIONS ON TREES AND POWER LINES IN A LARGE PART OF CENTRAL
ARKANSAS. BY LATE AFTERNOON...THE PRECIPITATION TRANSITIONED TO
SLEET AGAIN...THEN SNOW. WINDS WERE STRONG AND GUSTY AND SNOWFALL
WAS HEAVY...WITH NEAR-BLIZZARD CONDITIONS REPORTED OVER PORTIONS OF
CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS. BY THE TIME THE SNOW ENDED...OVER A
FOOT OF SNOW HAD ACCUMULATED FROM NORTH OF HOT SPRINGS TO NEAR
MOUNTAIN VIEW. NEARLY THE ENTIRE STATE SAW SNOW...AND AT MOST
LOCATIONS...THIS ONE STORM MADE DECEMBER THE SNOWIEST ON RECORD.

BELOW IS A LIST OF SELECTED LOCATIONS IN ARKANSAS...AND THE RECORD
TEMPERATURES...PRECIPITATION...AND SNOWFALL FOR THOSE LOCATIONS FOR
DECEMBER 25TH.
