January through March Events, 2013 (Pg2)

Ice buildup was impressive at Batesville (Independence County) on 02/21/2013. While there were thousands of power outages, this did not come close to the devastation caused by the Ice Storm of January, 2009.

The pattern that resulted in ice repeated on March 21st, but it was a little colder this time. Ahead of an approaching storm system to the west, high pressure provided cool and very dry air. As precipitation formed aloft and fell, the atmosphere cooled rapidly due to evaporation and temperatures plummeted.

Temperatures dropped quickly through the 30s in northern Arkansas as precipitation began during the afternoon and evening of 03/21/2013.

A forecast sounding (temperature and dewpoint profile with height) at Little Rock (Pulaski County) showed saturated air aloft, and much drier conditions toward the ground at 400 pm CDT on 03/21/2013.

In the northern counties, snow evolved quickly, with sleet briefly mixing with rain in central and southern Arkansas.

Initially, rain fell into the drier air and evaporation caused rapid cooling. Sleet formed and mixed with the rain until the atmosphere saturated in the lower levels of the atmosphere.
