Severe Storms on August 7-9, 2012 |
| |
Weak systems continued to arrive from the northwest in early August and tracked around the periphery of high pressure in the Rockies. The systems stirred the atmosphere enough to create rising air currents, storm clouds and hit and miss downpours. Storms mostly popped up during the heat of the afternoon and evening.

| In the picture: Cool thunderstorm outflow headed toward Little Rock (Pulaski County) from the northwest at 423 pm CDT on 08/08/2012. |

| In the picture: By 514 pm CDT, the outflow had triggered new storms, with a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect locally. |

On the 7th, an isolated storm produced quarter size hail and blew down a few trees at Cove (Polk County). The next day, storms were a little more widespread in northern and western Arkansas. As rain approached central sections of the state, cool outflow outran the precipitation and cut it off from warmth/moisture to the southeast. Without a feed of unstable air, storms tended to weaken. However, the outflow acted as a bulldozer and forced warmth/moisture aloft. Updrafts created new storms, and these quickly became severe.
Numerous power lines were downed in North Little Rock (Pulaski County), with 1.16 inches of rain at the North Little Rock Airport (Pulaski County). Trees were pushed over in Little Rock (Pulaski County).

Severe storms hit portions of the southeast on the 9th. A 63 mph gust was noted at the Monticello Municipal Airport (Drew County). Also, 1.98 inches of rain was measured. |
| In the picture: Storm structure near Monticello (Drew County) indicated an overshooting top, or strong updrafts into the storm cloud between 800 pm and 830 pm CDT on 08/09/2012. Shortly after 830 pm CDT, the overshooting top disappeared, with updrafts collapsing (under rain/hail) and becoming downdrafts (a microburst). |
| In the picture: A look at ASOS (Automated Surface Observing System) at the Monticello Municipal Airport (Drew County) showed a gust of 55 knots (63 mph) from 57 degrees (the northeast) at 0132 UTC (832 pm CDT) on 08/09/2012. |

A lot of trees were toppled in Monticello, Cominto and Coleman (all in Drew County). Temperatures fell quickly into the 70s given locally heavy rain and gusty northeast winds.
| The storms were followed by a cold front from the north. The front brought cooler and drier air, and the end of triple digit heat in most areas...at least for awhile. |
| In the picture: A cold front swept toward the Gulf Coast on 08/10/2012, and replaced a lot of humidity (dewpoints in the 70s) with much drier air (dewpoints in the 50s). Dewpoints are dashed yellow lines. |
Even so, the temperature still managed to hit 100 degrees at Russellville (Pope County) on the 10th. This was the twenty fifth day in a row daytime readings reached the century mark (or higher).
