Severe Storms/Heavy Rain on August 1-2, 2012 |
| |
Triple digit heat continued into early August surrounding hot high pressure in the southern Plains. The high wobbled far enough to the west to allow a weak storm system to approach from Kansas and Missouri on the 1st. |
| In the picture: A ridge of high pressure ("H") was over the Texas panhandle, with clockwise flow around the high creating northwest winds aloft over Arkansas on 08/01/2012. |
| In the picture: The satellite showed a Mesoscale Convective Vortex (MCV) approaching from the northwest at 1215 pm CDT on 08/01/2012. |
| In the picture: A few hours later, the MCV triggered scattered thunderstorms in northern Arkansas. |

The system was once associated with a large cluster of thunderstorms. The storms weakened, and the system was left behind. This Mesoscale Convective Vortex (MCV) tracked into northern sections of the state during the afternoon, and initiated new storms between 400 and 500 pm CDT.
The storms generated damaging wind gusts that downed or snapped trees and power poles at Harrison (Boone County). Power outages were reported in the area. Boat docks were overturned at Bull Shoals (Marion County).
Trees were toppled onto houses at Yellville (Marion County) and Ash Flat (Sharp County). A semi truck and horse trailer were overturned near Viola (Fulton County). At Salem (Fulton County), a 66 mph gust was measured.

| In the picture: The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed scattered severe thunderstorms tracking across northern Arkansas during the afternoon and early evening of 08/01/2012. |
Severe weather mostly came to an end during the evening, but hit and miss thunderstorms continued through the overnight hours. By morning, precipitation covered much of the eastern half of the state.
Some spots got over an inch of rain. Twenty four hour amounts as of 700 am CDT on the 2nd included 1.81 inches at Saddle (Fulton County), 1.38 inches at Shirley (Van Buren County), 1.22 inches at Omaha (Boone County) and 1.16 inches at Salem (Fulton County).

During the morning of the 2nd (between 600 am and 700 am CDT), a house fire was apparently started by lightning near Albion (White County). An elderly woman that lived at the home was killed in the fire.
