Severe Storms/Heavy Rain on July 26-27, 2012 |
| |
Drought and heat relief was much needed heading into the final days of July. A stubborn area of high pressure over the southern Plains was responsible for these conditions. Fortunately, the high wobbled toward the Rockies on the 26th. Clockwise flow around the high steered a weak cold front into Arkansas from the north. |
| In the picture: The satellite showed clusters of showers and thunderstorms building across northern and western Arkansas during the evening of 07/26/2012 and early on 07/27/2012. |
Along the front, showers and thunderstorms were widespread from the northeast United States all the way to Texas. Precipitation slowly worked into northern and western Arkansas during the afternoon and early evening.
| In the picture: The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed a band of showers and thunderstorms from the central Appalachians westward through Arkansas and northern Texas at 638 pm CDT on 07/26/2012. Much of the area was covered by severe weather watches. |
Temperatures ahead of the front ranged from the mid 90s to around 105 degrees. It was the 10th day in a row with readings of at least 100 degrees at Russellville (Pope County), and the 9th straight day at Fort Smith (Sebastian County).

As storms and heavy downpours arrived in the north/west, the mercury cooled into the 70s. |
| In the picture: Thunderstorms cooled temperatures more than 20 degrees in portions of northern and western Arkansas between 300 pm and 600 pm CDT on 07/26/2012. |
There were some strong to damaging wind gusts at well. A 54 mph gust was measured at Harrison (Boone County) around 335 pm CDT. Gusts reached 64 mph at Newport (Jackson County) at 813 pm CDT. Trees and power lines were blown down at Calico Rock (Izard County). One tree briefly blocked Arkansas Highway 223. Trees were also pushed over at London (Pope County) and Harvey (Scott County).
Just northwest of Salem (Fulton County), an inch and a half of rain fell in about 45 minutes. At Newport (Jackson County), 0.46 inch fell in 6 minutes!
Rainfall exceeded two inches in parts of the west. Twenty four hour amounts through 700 am CDT on the 27th included 3.74 inches at Waldron (Scott County), 2.64 inches at Narrows Dam (Pike County), 2.56 inches at Ratcliff (Logan County), 2.22 inches at Cove (Polk County) and 2.15 inches at Ashdown (Little River County).
