Pattern on October 12-14, 2012
 
The pattern at 1000 am CDT on 10/12/2012. Significant rainfall (over an inch) was mostly non-existent during the first ten days of October. That changed on the 12th as a cold front sagged into Arkansas from Missouri.

Widespread rain and embedded thunderstorms spread over northern and western sections of the state. Twenty four hour rainfall through 100 am CDT on the 13th included 1.61 inches at Harrison (Boone County), 1.56 inches at Highfill (Benton County), 1.44 inches at Mountain Home (Baxter County), 1.29 inches at Fayetteville (Washington County) and 1.23 inches at Fort Smith (Sebastian County).

 

North of the front, temperatures failed to make it out of the 50s at some locations. The high temperature on the 12th at Mountain Home (Baxter County) was 57 degrees. It wasn't much warmer at Jonesboro (Craighead County) and Newport (Jackson County) with 61 degrees at both sites.

Farther south, the mercury climbed into the lower and mid 80s. De Queen (Sevier County) had 84 degrees, with 82 degrees at Monticello (Drew County) and Texarkana (Miller County).

During the night of the 12th/early on the 13th, the front started retreating back to the north. Areas of fog formed as increasing moisture from the Gulf Coast mingled with cooler air associated with the front. Visibilities of a half mile or less were common. A Dense Fog Advisory was posted by the National Weather Service.

On the 13th, the front exited toward the upper Midwest, and fog dissipated. Breezy southerly winds brought well above normal temperatures in the mid 70s to mid 80s. Meanwhile, a new cold front  approached from the Plains late in the day.

A line of showers and thunderstorms developed ahead of the front, and surged into the state from Oklahoma during the evening. Some of the storms were severe in the western counties.

In the picture: The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed showers and thunderstorms developing from eastern Oklahoma into north central Texas between 630 pm and 700 pm CDT on 10/13/2012. Severe weather watches and a few warnings were in effect.

 

Around 630 pm CDT, lightning delayed the first quarter of the Arkansas and Kentucky college football game at Fayetteville (Washington County) for a little more than an hour. Conditions worsened later, with the game finally suspended in the third quarter.

Between 930 pm and 1000 pm CDT, a weak tornado (rated EF1/90 to 100 mph winds) tracked 12.5 miles from 4 miles north-northeast of Cave Springs to 3 miles northeast of Avoca (both in Benton County). This is in the Tulsa County Warning Area. The tornado hit a couple of subdivisions and damaged homes (mostly roofs). On the west side of Rogers (Benton County), several businesses had structural damage and windows blown out. A two by four was lofted through a car windshield and injured two people. Trees and power poles were uprooted or snapped.

 

Tornadoes in 2012

The Benton County tornado on October 13th was only the 14th tornado of 2012 in Arkansas. At the same time last year, there were 74 tornadoes. In a typical year, there are 33 tornadoes across the state.

 

The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed a bowing segment (backward "C" shaped line of storms) in western Arkansas at 1044 pm CDT on 10/13/2012.

There were indications of perhaps another weak tornado near Ione (Logan County) around 1045 pm CDT. Dual-Pol technology showed possible debris in the same area where rotation was noted. However, no damage was reported.

Winds wrapped around the northern end of the bow, or bookend, and may have led to a weak tornado a few miles north and west of Ione (Logan County).

 

Between 1045 pm and 1115 pm CDT, gusts reached 60 mph at Ozark (Franklin County). Trees blocked Highway 10 a couple of miles west of Booneville (Logan County) and along Highway 103 at Ozone (Johnson County). Storms tended to weaken as they worked into central/eastern Arkansas after midnight.

Rain lingered across the southeast half of the state through the early afternoon of the 14th. As rain tapered off, winds picked up. Gusty southwest winds shifted to the west/northwest as the Plains front crossed the area.

 

Event rainfall generally ranged from one half to one and a half inches. Lighter amounts from a quarter to a half inch fell along portions of the Mississippi River. From 100 am CDT on the 12th through 700 pm CDT on the 14th,  totals were over three inches in parts of the northwest. Sixty six hour rainfall through 700 pm CDT on 10/14/2012.
