The Pattern on January 9-13, 2013 (Pg1) |
| |
An unsettled pattern evolved on January 9th. A storm system approached Arkansas from the southern Plains, with moisture increasing readily ahead of the system.
| In the picture: A visible satellite image showed clouds swirling around a storm system ("L") in the southern Plains, with an infrared image highlighting storms along the Louisiana Gulf Coast at 945 am CST on 01/10/2013. |
Widespread rain developed, and was heaviest in southeast sections of the state. Some amounts were over two inches. Totals could have been higher if not for thunderstorms along the Louisiana Gulf coast (which robbed some of the available moisture).
Twenty four hour rainfall through 600 am CST on the 10th included 2.90 inches at Arkansas City (Desha County), 2.85 inches at Kelso (Desha County), 2.80 inches at Eudora (Chicot County), 2.71 inches at Portland (Ashley County), 2.49 inches at Star City (Lincoln County) and 2.21 inches at Monticello (Drew County).

Rain tapered off during the morning of the 10th. On the back edge of the large rain area, the pressure dropped markedly and a wake low (small center of low pressure) formed.
Strong east to southeast winds briefly kicked up from central into eastern Arkansas. Gusts reached 49 mph at Pine Bluff (Jefferson County) at 1002 am CST, and 45 mph at Little Rock (Pulaski County) at 947 am CST.
| In the picture: There was a tight pressure gradient behind a large rain area in central Arkansas at 1000 am CST on 01/10/2013. The lowest pressure is represented by a wake low ("L") just east of Little Rock (Pulaski County). |

Similar conditions were reported in portions of Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama later in the day. Trees were downed and there were some power outages.
Scattered showers flared up again during the late afternoon and evening of the 10th as the Plains system tracked toward southwest Missouri. The system exited during the overnight hours, and dry weather followed.
| In the picture: The pattern at 600 am CST on 01/13/2013 featured a storm system ("L") in the Rockies and high pressure ("H") off the Florida coast. Between these features, a moist southwest flow was in place over Arkansas. A front became nearly parallel to the flow as it inched toward the southeast United States. This gave the front little if any push (it stalled). Plenty of moisture resided along the front. |
| |
There was a lull on the 11th, but a new cold front approached from the west. Mild conditions preceded the front on the 12th, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the 70s in the southeast half of the state.
Behind the front, temperatures plummeted into the 30s in the northwest by sunset. The front came to a halt as it approached central Arkansas.
| In the picture: Temperatures at 600 pm CST on 01/12/2013. There was a forty degree difference across the front. The front stalled for awhile and waited for a storm system ("L") to pass before progressing through southern and eastern Arkansas during the overnight hours. |
Rain and scattered thunderstorms focused along and north of the front, and there was a deluge for several hours.
| In the picture: The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed a nearly stationary band of heavy rain from west central into north central Arkansas from 158 pm CST to 728 pm CST on 01/12/2013. |
Three to more than five inches of rain dumped from Mena (Polk County) to Russellville (Pope County), Clinton (Van Buren County), Mountain View (Stone County), Hardy (Sharp County) and Pocahontas (Randolph County).
