PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LITTLE ROCK AR
254 AM CDT WED JUN 5 2013

...A RECORD COLD SPRING IN ARKANSAS...

PERIODS OF UNSEASONABLY COLD WEATHER IN MARCH...APRIL AND ESPECIALLY
MAY BROUGHT TEMPERATURES DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY BELOW THE 30-YEAR
AVERAGE THIS SPRING.

AT MANY LOCATIONS...MARCH WAS THE COLDEST IN DECADES AND ONE OF THE
COLDEST ON RECORD. APRIL WAS SLIGHTLY WARMER...BUT THE BEGINNING OF
THE MONTH STARTED OUT RATHER COLD...ESPECIALLY HIGH TEMPERATURES.
PERHAPS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT THING ABOUT THE SPRING WAS THE LATE
RECORD COLD IN EARLY MAY. STATIONS FROM THE FAR NORTHWEST TO THE FAR
SOUTHEAST RECORDED THE COLDEST MAY TEMPERATURES EVER...AND SNOW FELL
IN THE STATE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN THE MONTH.

THIS IS QUITE A REMARKABLE TURNAROUND FROM LAST SPRING...WHICH WAS THE
HOTTEST ON RECORD IN ARKANSAS. IN FACT...PRELIMINARY INDICATIONS ARE THAT
STATEWIDE...THIS COULD BE THE COLDEST SPRING SINCE 1960...AND ONE OF THE
COLDEST ON RECORD.

AT HARDY...THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE SPRING WAS THE COLDEST
SINCE 1899.

AT THE LOCATIONS LISTED BELOW...THE SPRING OF 2013 WAS ONE OF THE
COLDEST EVER RECORDED. ALL DATA IS CONSIDERED PRELIMINARY UNTIL FINAL
CERTIFICATION BY THE NATIONAL CLIMATIC DATA CENTER IN ASHEVILLE NORTH
CAROLINA.
