...DAMAGE SURVEYS ARE ONGOING ACROSS ARKANSAS...

AN OUTBREAK OF TORNADOES WAS ANTICIPATED DURING THE EVENING OF MAY
1ST. NUMEROUS SUPERCELLS...OR STORMS WITH ROTATING UPDRAFTS...
DEVELOPED ACROSS CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN ARKANSAS. ROTATION WAS STRONG
AT TIMES WITH SEVERAL OF THESE STORMS...AND THERE WERE QUITE A FEW
REPORTS OF FUNNEL CLOUDS. HOWEVER...IN MOST CASES...IT APPEARS THE
FUNNELS DID NOT MAKE IT TO THE GROUND.

THERE WERE NOT MORE TORNADOES PARTLY DUE TO A LACK OF SHEAR AS THE
EVENT STARTED. ONCE SHEAR BECAME MORE SIGNIFICANT LATER IN THE
EVENT...THERE WAS NOT AS MUCH INSTABILITY DUE TO THE LOSS OF DAYTIME
HEATING. FORTUNATELY...THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS DID NOT COME
TOGETHER.

EVEN SO...ISOLATED TORNADOES WERE SPAWNED.

1.  TORNADO #1
    COUNTIES AFFECTED: WOODRUFF
    CLASSIFICATION:    EF1...86-110 MPH
    STARTING POINT:    1.5 MILES WSW OF PENROSE
    ENDING POINT:      2 MILES S OF FAIR OAKS /INSIDE NWS MEMPHIS
                       SERVICE AREA/
    PATH LENGTH:       2.3 MILES BEFORE CROSSING INTO THE NWS
                       MEMPHIS AREA...6.3 MILES TOTAL
    NOTES:             A WALL WAS CAVED IN AT A FLYING SERVICE AND
                       PART OF THE ROOF WAS REMOVED. OTHER DAMAGE
                       INCLUDED PART OF A ROOF AND TWO WALLS BEING
                       REMOVED FROM A HOUSE. THERE ALSO NUMEROUS
                       TREES AND POWERLINES BLOWN DOWN INCLUDING A
                       PICK UP TRUCK CRUSHED BY A TREE.

2.  TORNADO #2
    COUNTIES AFFECTED: CLEVELAND
    CLASSIFICATION:    EF1...86-110 MPH
    STARTING POINT:    2.4 MILES WNW OF RYE
    ENDING POINT:      2.5 MILES NW OF RYE
    PATH LENGTH:       0.5 MILES
    NOTES:             NUMEROUS TREES WERE BLOWN DOWN. THIS BRIEF TORNADO
                       WAS EMBEDDED IN A LARGE SWATH OF WIND DAMAGE...
                       WITH A BARN AND SOME SHEDS DESTROYED AND NUMEROUS
                       TREES AND POWER LINES KNOCKED DOWN. 

3.  TORNADO #3
    COUNTIES AFFECTED: CALHOUN...BRADLEY
    CLASSIFICATION:    EF1...86-110 MPH
    STARTING POINT:    7.7 MILES SE OF ARTESIAN
    ENDING POINT:      6.2 MILES SSW OF JERSEY
    PATH LENGTH:       3 MILES
    NOTES:             DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO TREES BLOWN DOWN ON
                       TIMBER LAND. NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WAS NOTED.
