WEEK...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...THE ARKANSAS DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY 
MANAGEMENT...THE ARKANSAS DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND TOURISM...THE U.S. 
ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS...THE ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES OF ARKANSAS...
AND ENTERGY ARKANSAS INCORPORATED ARE SPONSORS OF THE WEEK IN 
ARKANSAS.

FROM 2004 THROUGH 2013...ARKANSAS AVERAGED MORE THAN 850 THOUSAND
CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING FLASHES PER YEAR. THIS MADE ARKANSAS
THE SIXTH MOST ACTIVE STATE IN THE NATION FOR LIGHTNING.

IF WE CONSIDER LIGHTNING FLASHES PER SQUARE MILE...ARKANSAS COMES
IN FOURTH IN THE UNITED STATES...WITH 16.3 LIGHTNING FLASHES PER
SQUARE MILE EACH YEAR.

THE LAST LIGHTNING FATALITY IN ARKANSAS OCCURRED ON AUGUST 8 2011...
WHEN A MAN NEAR RECTOR IN CLAY COUNTY WAS KILLED BY LIGHTNING WHILE 
CHOPPING COTTON. SO FAR THIS YEAR...THERE HAVE BEEN SIX LIGHTNING 
INJURIES IN THE STATE. ON APRIL 24TH...SIX WORKERS AT A NATURAL 
GAS WELL DRILLING SITE WERE INJURED BY LIGHTNING NEAR ENDERS IN
FAULKNER COUNTY.

IN 2013 IN THE UNITED STATES...23 PEOPLE WERE KILLED BY LIGHTNING
STRIKES. OF THESE...
  91 PERCENT WERE OUTSIDE
  74 PERCENT WERE MALE

SO FAR IN 2014...THERE HAVE BEEN SEVEN LIGHTNING FATALITIES IN THE
UNITED STATES.

3.  FISHING ON THE EDGE OF A LAKE
4.  RIDING A MOTORCYCLE ON THE HIGHWAY
5.  WORKING ON A ROOF AT A CAR DEALERSHIP
6.  PICKING BLUEBERRIES
7.  UNDER A TREE IN A PARK
