State Rainfall Record Recognized
 
There was a lot of rain across Arkansas in 2009. There was more rain in some places than in others. At Leola (Grant County), there was about double the normal rain...or 100.05 inches. This is the highest annual total in Arkansas recorded history.

 

James Riggan (right) was presented with a certificate of record by Renee Fair (left), Meteorologist in Charge of the National Weather Service in Little Rock. The precipitation was measured by James Riggan, the cooperative observer in the area. On October 27, 2010...a ceremony was held in Leola (Grant County) to recognize this record.

The previous highest amount in Arkansas was 98.55 inches at New Hope (Pike County) in 1957. Here are a few attendees of the ceremony in Leola (Grant County).

The ceremony was attended by local government officials, the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM), the National Weather Service and family members of Mr. Riggan.
