Flash Flooding in July 2005 (16th)

The sounding (temperature and dewpoint profile with height) indicated the the atmosphere was juicy over Little Rock (Pulaski County) as of 7 am CDT on 07/16/2005. The remnants of Hurricane Dennis moved from the Florida panhandle (near Pensacola) through the Tennessee Valley (just east of Arkansas) and into the Ohio Valley before stalling in mid-July. Around Dennis, a large area of low pressure aloft was noted...with plenty of tropical moisture in place. This led to several days of scattered showers and thunderstorms in Arkansas...and locally heavy downpours.

Temperatures and dewpoints were similar well aloft (a nearly saturated column of air)...and this led to locally heavy downpours later in the day.

Between 4 and 5 pm CDT on the 16th, thunderstorms began popping up just northeast of Little Rock near Sherwood (Pulaski County). While the storms moved to the northeast, they had a tendency to build to the southwest...a phenomenon called "backbuilding". This led to prolonged heavy rainfall. The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed storms backbuilding near Sherwood (Pulaski County) around 500 pm CDT on 07/16/2005.

Water covered Brockington Road in Sherwood (Pulaski County) following nearly 3 inches of rain during the afternoon of 07/16/2005. In the Sherwood area (and northeast toward Jacksonville), up to 3 inches of rain was measured in about an hour. A Flash Flood Warning was issued for the area by the National Weather Service...and high water problems (such as roads covered by water) materialized.
