Young girls from rural middle school grades 6 through 8 participated
in the South Plains area’s first W.I.S.E. program (Women
In Science Endeavors) at Lubbock’s Science Spectrum on Saturday,
April 5. The WISE Program targets young girls who may not have
the opportunity to engage and interact in careers that involve
math and science.

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Lubbock, TX
participated in the W.I.S.E Program, sponsored by Xcel Energy,
Region 17 Education Service Center, the Science Spectrum and
a host of other sponsors. Meteorologist Felecia Bowser, the
primary presenter gave a tour of WFO Lubbock and engaged them
in conversation about careers in science-related fields. Julie
Phillipson, Texas Tech student volunteer at WFO Lubbock, also
assisted with this event. The W.I.S.E. participants were also
involved in a host of other science related activities at the
Science Spectrum.
