On the
last day of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Texas, the NWS Office in
Lubbock participated in two outreach events that helped raise severe
weather awareness in the local community. The first of these events
was a Severe Weather Awareness Fair sponsored by the Lubbock Emergency
Planning Committee (LEPC). Representatives from local CERT teams, the
Red Cross, and others participated with tables and displays in the Lubbock
South Plains Mall. Approximately 100 people stopped by the NWS display
during the event.

Another
outreach event on the same day was the Severe Weather Awareness Day
sponsored by the Texas Tech Student Chapter of the American Meteorological
Society. This event was held in the Science Spectrum atrium and lobby.
The Lubbock NWS Office participated in this event with a table and display.
Forecasters and Lubbock NWS employees chatted with many of the nearly
900 people who came through the Science Spectrum on this day. Activities
included numerous weather displays and lots of fun hands-on activities
for the kids. These included face painting, viewing a tornado machine,
door prizes, and meeting local media celebrities. Media representatives
from KCBD-TV were on hand to chat with participants, and answer weather
questions. The Lubbock South Plains Storm Spotting Team also staffed
a display. The event included several educational presentations. Approximately
100 people attended talks about fire weather and CoCoRahs, and nearly
60 attended a Skywarn Spotter Training session. NWS forecasters also
gave three tours of the Lubbock Office during the morning and early
afternoon with 46 people going through the facility.
