What?

Come see where your local National Weather Service office monitors the weather, produces forecasts, and issues watches and warning 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for the South Plains region. Activities will be held both inside and outside, so plan accordingly.

Activities

There will be a variety of fun and entertaining activities for young and old alike to participate in. Just a few of the activities include:

  • Visit with local NWS meteorologists and staff 
  • Tour the NWS office building and see the equipment we use to carry out our mission (15-20 minutes)
  • Participate in insightful and entertaining experiments conducted by the TTU Atmospheric Science Group
  • Face painting for the kids
  • Explore the cutting edge mobile radar and observation platforms developed by Texas Tech
  • Learn about the West Texas Mesonet, a real-time observation network covering most of northwest Texas
  • Tour mobile command vehicles used by Lubbock and Levelland
  • Visit with local weather spotters from the South Plains Storm Spotting Team
  • Tour the NWS WSR-88D radar between 1 and 3 pm (located at the Lubbock airport - travel not provided)
  • See where the NOAA weather radio broadcasts originate
  • Door prizes will be drawn every hour

The Lubbock National Weather Service is located on the east side of the Science Spectrum Building found on South Loop 289 (south side), between University Avenue and Indiana Avenue, in Lubbock, Texas.
