September a Bit Cooler and Much Wetter than Normal

SEPTEMBER 2008 WAS CERTAINLY A MEMORABLE MONTH WEATHER-WISE HERE IN THE SOUTH PLAINS...SOUTHERN PANHANDLE...AND ROLLING PLAINS PARTICULARLY DUE TO THE SEPTEMBER 11TH AND 12TH RAINS. HOWEVER...FOR MUCH OF THE REMAINDER OF THE MONTH PLEASANT CONDITIONS WERE THE NORM.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES: THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN LUBBOCK WAS 68.9 DEGREES WHICH IS 2.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE AVERAGE HIGH WAS 80.7 AND AVERAGE LOW WAS 56.6 WITH EXTREMES OF 93 AND 50 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN CHILDRESS WAS 71.3 DEGREES WHICH IS 2.8 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE AVERAGE HIGH WAS 82.9 AND AVERAGE LOW WAS 59.1 WITH EXTREMES OF 91 AND 52 DEGREES. LUBBOCK RECEIVED 8.7 INCHES OF RAINFALL IN SEPTEMBER WHICH IS 339% OF NORMAL. TWO NEW RAINFALL RECORDS WERE SET FOR LUBBOCK IN SEPTEMBER. 11-12 SEP 2008-NEW 24 HOUR RAINFALL RECORD...........7.80 IN 11 SEP 2008-NEW MAXIMUM IN ONE CALENDAR DAY..........7.46 IN WHILE THE SINGLE DAY RAINFALL WAS SIGNIFICANT...FOR THE MONTH...THE TOTAL PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE ALL TIME LUBBOCK MONTHLY RAINFALL MAXIMUM OF 13.93 INCHES IN SEPTEMBER 1936. CHILDRESS RECEIVED 6.77 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FOR SEPTEMBER WHICH IS 270% OF NORMAL. LOOKING FORWARD IN ANTICIPATION TO COOLER TEMPERATURES...HERE ARE THE AVERAGE DATES OF THE FIRST FREEZE IN THE FALL FOR SELECTED CITIES.
