| Bonnet Carrie Spillway |
The Bonnet Carrie Spillway is located in St. Charles Parish about 33 miles up river from Canal Street in New Orleans. It was built to protect the communities downstream of the spillway from Mississippi River floods by diverting water from the Mississippi River into Lake Pontchartrain.. The spillway was built from 1929 to 1931 and is owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Since it's completion, it has been opened during the floods of 1937, 1945, 1950, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1983, and 1997.
