A large, rotating thunderstorm moving southeast at 40 mph produced an F1 tornado in northwestern Newton County, 10 miles northwest of the town of Newton. At least three homes received roof damage, mainly along Highway 63 about one mile east of the Jasper County line. Hail as large as golf balls was reported to the Newton County Sheriff's Department. Large trees were blown down along it's path of at least 5 miles.
