Tropical Cyclone
- A warm-core area of low pressure originating over
tropical or subtropical waters, containing organized
deep thunderstorms, a closed surface wind circulation,
and maintained by warm ocean waters beneath it.
Tropical Depression
- A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained
surface wind speed is 38 mph (33 knots) or less.
Tropical Storm
- A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained
surface wind speed ranges from 39 mph (34 knots) to 73
mph (63 knots).
Hurricane
- A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained
surface wind is 74 mph (64 knots) or more.
Tropical Storm Watch
– Issued for specific coastal areas when a tropical
storm may affect the area within 36 hours.
Tropical Storm Warning
– Issued when tropical storm conditions are expected for
a specified coastal area within 24 hours or less.
Hurricane Watch
– Issued for specific coastal areas when a hurricane may
affect the area within 36 hours.
Hurricane Warning –
Issued when hurricane conditions are expected for a
specified coastal area in 24 hours or less. |
