Tropical Weather Definitions

Tropical Cyclone - A warm-core area of low pressure originating over tropical or subtropical waters, containing organized deep thunderstorms, a closed surface wind circulation, and maintained by warm ocean waters beneath it.

Tropical Depression - A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained surface wind speed is 38 mph (33 knots) or less. 

Tropical Storm - A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained surface wind speed ranges from 39 mph (34 knots) to 73 mph (63 knots). 

Hurricane - A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained surface wind is 74 mph (64 knots) or more. 

Tropical Storm Watch – Issued for specific coastal areas when a tropical storm may affect the area within 36 hours. 

Tropical Storm Warning – Issued when tropical storm conditions are expected for a specified coastal area within 24 hours or less. 

Hurricane Watch – Issued for specific coastal areas when a hurricane may affect the area within 36 hours. 

Hurricane Warning – Issued when hurricane conditions are expected for a specified coastal area in 24 hours or less.

An ominous severe thunderstorm   approaches the NWS Lake Charles office on June 4, 2007. 

This severe storm produced one of the most damaging thunderstorm events in the history of Lake Charles, with hailstones up to golfball size and winds measured at 75 mph causing considerable damage throughout the city.
