Satellite and Radar Imagery Movies of Atlantic Hurricane Seasons on DVD

Prepared by:
Donovan Landreneau, Meteorologist Forecaster

This is a collection of video DVDs that show satellite and radar imagery movies ranging from entire Atlantic hurricane seasons to individual U.S. tropical storm and hurricane landfalls. The video DVDs are recorded on 4.7 GB General Purpose DVD-Rs, and play just like a movie DVD. These DVD-Rs should play in DVD-ROM drives on computers with the proper DVD player software, as well as home DVD players capable of playing DVD-R discs. All of these DVD-Rs: 1) have no audio; 2) are region free, meaning that you can play them in any DVD player around the world; and 3) are not copy protected, meaning you can make as many disc copies on your DVD-R/RW recorder drive as you please.

2000-2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season GOES Satellite Imagery
(One DVD per season)

These DVDs present a chronological succession of half hourly GOES‑East satellite imagery for the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico.  The length of a normal season of satellite imagery (from 06/01 to 11/30) should be just over 14 minutes, but with the satellite eclipses, its closer to 13 minutes.

1995-2012 Atlantic Tropical Storms & Hurricanes Affecting the United States:  A Satellite & Radar Study DVDs (One DVD per season except 2000-2001, 2009-2010, and 2011-2012 combined into one DVD release).

These DVDs chronicle the life cycles of the tropical cyclones that affect the United States each season with GOES infrared and visible satellite imagery, and is followed by land based National Weather Service WSR-88D radar imagery in the areas affected. The DVD is menu driven, with separate storm sub-menus describing the areas affected. Within each storm sub-menu, separate satellite and radar sub-menus allows the user to choose which satellite or radar sequence to view.

Hurricane Audrey Radar Loops: June 26-27, 1957

This DVD presents rare land-based radar imagery of Hurricane Audrey June 26-27, 1957. The original source was a 16mm film made directly from photographs of the Plan Position Indicator (PPI) scopes of WSR-(1-3) radars from Galveston, Houston, Beaumont, Lake Charles, and Baton Rouge. The author used a 16mm projector to display the movie on the screen while recording it with a DV camcorder, then transferring it to DVD.

These DVDs present a chronological succession of geostationary satellite imagery for the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico (except 1978 that uses GOES-West for the Eastern Pacific movie).  The original source of these movies was 16mm films, which NCDC transferred to VHS tapes.  The author transferred these VHS tapes to DV tape, then to DVD. This would explain some of the resolution loss, especially with the 1980 loop, which came from a second generation VHS copy.

Due to the enormous size of these movies, they are not available on our server to be downloaded via the Internet.  Downloading these movies would compromise other mission critical data delivery on our server and web site.

Unfortunately, our office PC's underwent a major overhaul installing Windows 7, and the software to make these disc copies is not compatible with Windows 7, thus the NWS Lake Charles office is unable to reproduce any DVDs at this time.  It is unknown when we will get the new compatible software to resume copy requests.

The Calcasieu Parish Public Library has copies of these discs to view and/or check out. The discs are Region free and not copy protected, thus you are allowed to make copies of them.
