Clear Channel Stations

The AM band is allocated into three categories: local, regional, and clear channel.

  • Local channels are limited to a maximum transmitter power of 1000 watts and use a non-directional antenna.

  • Regional channels use higher transmitter powers, typically up to about 20,000 watts, and directional antennas.

  • Clear channel stations can use 50,000 watts of power. They use both non-directional and directional antennas. There were fewer clear channel stations at one time as only one station assigned to any particular frequency. Today, with the use of directional antennas, two or more stations may be on the same frequency without interfere with other 50,000 watt stations.
