The tornado is but one threat to life and property that a severe thunderstorm can present. Large hail, strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning all can destroy property and kill. Whenever a thunderstorm reaches severe criteria a Severe Thundestorm Warning will be issued. Even non-severe thunderstorms can do damage and kill. Lightning is the number one weather killer each year, with nearly 140 persons killed in the United States annually. Technically, a severe thundestorm is considered to be one with either hail 3/4 of an inch or larger in diameter, or winds of 58 mph or higher.
