The Jackson National Weather Service Forecast Office (WSFO) provides
warnings for severe weather events in an area which encompasses
most of central Mississippi, plus two counties in southeast Arkansas
and 9 parishes in northeast Louisiana (see map). This is the County
Warning Area (CWA). The purpose of the warning
program is to provide accurate and timely warnings to help everyone
within our warning area to protect themselves and their property. The
greatest threat to life and property is usually from tornodoes, but
warnings are also issued for severe thunderstorms, high winds, flooding,
and winter weather events, such as ice storms.
Once the decision to issue a warning has been made, the warning is composed on
AWIPS WarnGen...using special software that allows rapid composition
and dissemination. The warnings are distributed via computer communications,
NOAA Weather Wire, and the network of NOAA Weather Radio stations with tone
alert emergency alarm feature. Local commercial radio and television
stations then broadcast the warning.
