NOAA Weather Radio has also been designated as the official warning radio for the nation for all type disasters, including earthquakes, hazardous spills, and civil- emergencies. Every household, business, school, and church should make NOAA Weather Radio a necessity item.

In an emergency, each station will transmit a warning tone signal which will activate weather radios that have specially designed receivers. Not all weather radios have this receiver, but all will receive the emergency broadcasts in the normal way. The alarm device is tested each Wednesday between 11 am and Noon when weather

conditions permit. Now, One can receive alerts for specific areas. With new digital technology the National Weather Service can target specific areas to be alerted using a Specific Area Message Encoder (SAME).

To receive the SAME signal you will need a programable NOAA Weather Radio, available at you local electronics store. You will also need the state and county codes for your area. These are available from the National Weather Service, your electronics store, or over the Internet at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr

Once your radio is programmed for your county you will only receive alerts for that county.
