Storm of the Month
|
Our MAY WINNER occurred on the evening of the 5th near Vaiden in southeastern
Carroll county as a cyclic supercell moved northeastward at 50+ mph. This storm
returned very intense reflectivity images with a classic Bounded Weak Echo Region
and a radar-defined Mesocyclone through 40 thousand feet! Several small
tornadoes were produced with generally minor structural damage reports.
The Probability of Severe Hail algorithm hit 100% with an estimated Hail Size
of over 2 inches at times. The associated MESO that was identified peaked out at
a Rank value of 11 with the Mesocyclone Strength Index topping out at 6640. This
Supercell also registered a VIL of 81 kg/m*m about ten minutes after most of the images
taken below. Our computer algorithms had some difficulty keeping track of the
numerous mesocyclones associated with this Cell while the storm Cell identifications
based on reflectivities were handled quite well.

40k depth of the Meso and 77 VIL - these two IDs(Cell 95 and
Meso 827) should have been associated together.

This cell definitely had a history of impressive rotation!
