Return to Storm of the Month Index Page

This month produced several complexes of strong thunderstorms each which dumped very heavy rainfall amounts that resulted in localized flooding problems. While the much needed rainfall amounts were impressive hydrologically, none of those storms were individually impressive from a severe weather perspective. Our JUNE STORM WINNER occurred just east of Meridian on the Alabama side of the border during the evening of the 2nd. The VILS exceeded 62 kg/m*m as 55dBz returns reached near 42,000 feet and an elevated 65dBz core was detected as high as 30,000 feet. A weak circulation accompanied this storm as it persisted above our severe criteria for about 25 minutes which is longer than the typical summertime pulse severe thunderstorm. The Hail algorithm peaked shortly after the images below with an estimated hail size of baseballs.
