Storm of the Month
|
Our JANUARY WINNER occurred nearly 100 miles southeast of the radar when golfball
size hail fell in parts of Forrest and Lamar Counties around 200 am on the morning of
the 22nd. The storm developed near Poplarville, headed toward Lumberton,
crossed Purvis and eventually Hattiesburg before weakening. The 4-Panel Base
Reflectivity image below reflects one of several volume scans where
the VILs exceeded 40 kg/m*m which is respectable for cold season convection!
The elevation of the 50dBz core was more like an early-spring thunderstorm
reaching to 29,000 feet with 60dBz returns to almost 20,000 feet. Normally,
we are concerned with rotation in winter-time storms but the compacted intensity
of this storm pushed our Probability of Severe Hail Algorithm to 70%.
The images below are relatively new displays of radar information taken from a
research radar display program that is being developed for operational use in
the AWIPS generation computers. We hope to bring our Storm of the Month images
from this new tool in the months ahead as these more powerful systems will allow us to
manipulate the radar signals more efficiently than the current WSR-88D displays.
